About the Organisation

Makerere University Joint AIDS Program (MJAP) emerged from the Mulago-Mbarara Teaching Hospitals Joint AIDS Program (MJAP) which was established in November 2004 under the then Makerere University Faculty of Medicine. With funding from the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and technical assistance from the United States of America Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), MJAP established a strong trail in the provision of quality comprehensive HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis (TB) services.

Overtime, MJAP has broadened its work beyond the support of provision of comprehensive HIV and TB services to include capacity strengthening for health care workers across Uganda and conduct of research to inform policies for HIV/TB and other HIV comorbidities in the country.

Currently, the flourishing institution plays a pivotal role in the Uganda health care system having developed strong links with the Ministry of Health through its contribution to various technical working groups and long term support of HIV/TB services in districts, regional referral hospitals and public health facilities across the various regions in the country.

Job Description

The USAID Local Partner Health Service Project East Central (LPHS-EC) is a project of Makerere University Joint AIDS Program (MJAP) funded by USAID. MJAP's Mission is to build partnerships and strengthen Health Systems to optimally respond to HIV/AIDS, TB and other diseases of public health importance in Africa. MJAP has Integrity, Excellence, Team Spirit, Compassion, and Respect for Individuals as Core Values. Our Vision is Universal and equitable access to quality health care for healthier populations. Project overview:
MJÁP was granted the PEPFAR funding Award for the USAID Local Partner Health Services in the East Central Uganda. Under this activity, MJAP supports public health facilities and their communities in 12 districts that include Bugiri, Bugweri Busia, Buyende, Iganga, Jinja, Kamuli, Kaliro, Luuka, Mayuge, Namayingo and Namutumba: to implement quality Integrated HIV/AIDS and TB services and contribute to the attainment and sustenance of epidemic control. MJAP is looking for competent, passionate, and committed individuals to fill the following positions:
4. Driver (1)

Anti-Fraud, Safeguarding & Protection Clause: MJAP holds a zero-tolerance policy against Fraud, Corruption, Sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment in all places where our programs are implemented. All MJAP employees are expected to maintain high ethical standards, protect organizational integrity and reputation, and ensure that MJAP work is conducted in honest and fair methods, in accordance with the MJAP Human Resource policies. Any policy Violations shall be subject to corrective action up to and including termination of employment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Transportation: Safely and efficiently operate a vehicle to transport passengers, goods, or materials to designated locations.

  • Route Planning: Plan the most efficient routes based on traffic conditions, weather, and time constraints to ensure timely arrival at destinations.

  • Vehicle Maintenance: Perform routine inspections of the vehicle before and after each trip to ensure it is in proper working condition. Report any mechanical issues or damage to the appropriate personnel.

  • Safety Compliance: Adhere to traffic laws, regulations, and company policies to ensure safe driving practices. Follow safety procedures for loading and unloading passengers or cargo.


  • Customer Service: Provide courteous and professional service to passengers or clients, assisting with loading and unloading luggage or goods as needed.

  • Communication: Maintain clear and effective communication with dispatchers, supervisors, or clients regarding pick-up and drop-off times, delays, or other relevant information.

  • Documentation: Keep accurate records of mileage, fuel consumption, vehicle maintenance, and passenger or cargo manifests as required.

  • Emergency Response: Respond calmly and appropriately to emergencies or accidents, following established protocols and procedures.

  • Adaptability: Adapt to changing schedules, routes, or assignments as needed to accommodate the needs of passengers or clients.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Driver's License: Possess a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle being operated (e.g., regular, commercial, or specialized license).

  • Clean Driving Record: Maintain a clean driving record with no major traffic violations or accidents. Some employers may require a minimum number of years of driving experience.

  • Safety Training: Complete any required safety training courses, such as defensive driving or first aid/CPR certification.

  • Physical Fitness: Be physically fit and capable of sitting for extended periods, lifting and carrying moderate loads, and performing vehicle inspections and maintenance tasks.


  • Geographical Knowledge: Familiarity with local roads, highways, and traffic patterns to plan efficient routes and navigate effectively.

  • Communication Skills: Clear verbal communication skills to interact with passengers, clients, and colleagues in a professional manner.

  • Reliability: Demonstrate punctuality, dependability, and a strong work ethic in fulfilling scheduled assignments and meeting deadlines.

  • Attention to Detail: Pay attention to detail in following driving directions, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring the safety and security of passengers or cargo.

  • Criminal Background Check: Pass a criminal background check and drug screening as required by employers or regulatory agencies.

  • Customer Service Skills: Provide friendly and courteous service to passengers or clients, demonstrating patience, professionalism, and respect.

  • Mechanical Aptitude: Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and troubleshooting skills to address minor issues and perform routine inspections.

  • Flexibility: Be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on the needs of the employer or clients.
