Job Description
The Deputy Regional Director (DRD) will provide strategic direction and leadership in business development and grants acquisition to support ChildFund’s Africa operations. Reporting to the Regional Director, the DRD will lead a regional Business Development team and coordinate with country offices, technical advisors, and global stakeholders to drive donor engagement, secure funding, and deliver high-quality proposals. The position will focus on positioning ChildFund as a leading partner for institutional donors, private sector stakeholders, and philanthropic foundations, while ensuring grant compliance and donor stewardship.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Develop and implement the Africa region’s business development strategy in collaboration with global teams.
Identify and cultivate new funding opportunities across public, private, and philanthropic sectors.
Lead pre-positioning efforts to enhance visibility and competitiveness in funding markets.
Build and maintain relationships with institutional donors and stakeholders to secure strategic partnerships.
Coordinate cross-functional teams for project design and proposal development.
Oversee proposal writing and submission processes.
Lead the BD team, ensuring performance, collaboration, and continuous learning.
Manage grant compliance in coordination with program and finance teams.
Develop internal capacity through training and knowledge sharing on donor compliance and proposal design.
Represent ChildFund at national, regional, and global levels to enhance external visibility.
Promote and uphold safeguarding policies and organizational values.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in international development, social sciences, or related field (required)
Master’s degree in development studies or similar field (preferred)
Experience:
Minimum 9 years’ experience in international development, with at least 5 years in a management role
Proven success in business development, grant acquisition, and managing donor-funded programs
Strong understanding of donor landscapes, including government, private sector, and philanthropic funders
Familiarity with program design, donor compliance, and proposal development processes
Experience working across diverse contexts in Africa
Experience in child sponsorship (added advantage)
Competencies:
Strategic thinker with excellent financial and project management skills
Strong relationship-building, negotiation, and networking skills
Excellent communication and presentation abilities
Fluency in English (French is a plus)
Proficiency in digital tools and data management systems
Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving skills, and cultural sensitivity
