How to Apply
The Deputy Project Manager for the Children’s Heart Project will have the following responsibilities:
Professional Representation: Serve as a professional representative of SP and CHP to all medical partners, including hospital administrators, pediatric cardiologists, pediatricians, and cardiothoracic surgeons.
Screening Preparation: Collaborate with the International Patient Coordinator and CHP Director to ensure children are scheduled for screenings and all required documentation is collected by CHP staff.
Medical Screenings Support: Work with the CHP Project Manager during medical screenings to assist with the evaluation of children on the list, facilitating a logical schedule and follow-up as needed. Prioritize children who are high risk (e.g., severely malnourished or very ill).
Follow-up Appointments: Arrange follow-up medical evaluations at UHI or an appropriate clinic for any child who shows illness or deterioration. Notify the Project Manager and CHP Director immediately and assist with physician evaluations, labs, x-rays, ECHOs, CT scans, or other relevant documentation.
Insurance Forms: Complete insurance forms for guardians and interpreters within 2 weeks after heart surgery, ensuring that all legal requirements are met for guardianship verification.
Pre-Travel Preparation: Prepare children for pre-approved cardiologists in hospital evaluations (including x-rays, medical exams, and follow-up before travel).
Guardian Interviews: Assist in the selection of an appropriate guardian for the CHP child and facilitate their travel arrangements.
Fit for Travel Appointments: Coordinate "Fit for Travel" appointments with pre-approved cardiologists to ensure the child is medically stable for travel. Ensure "Fit for Surgery" appointments with a pediatrician to rule out any respiratory infections or other health concerns before departure.
Monitoring Health Status: Monitor the child’s health status leading up to travel, ensuring that Fit for Surgery appointments occur on schedule (10, 7, 4, and 3 days before departure). Notify the Project Manager and CHP Director immediately of any symptoms or infectious processes.
Discharge Coordination: Obtain discharge records and recommendations from North American hospitals, ensuring continuity of care with local pediatric cardiologists for post-surgical CHP patients.
Medical Oversight: Provide medical oversight by consulting and liaising with Uganda Heart Institute, visiting medical teams, and conducting follow-up evaluations for CHP children.
Assist with Screening: Support visiting pediatric cardiologists with the screening and evaluation of children.
Special Needs Oversight: Provide medical oversight for children with special needs.
Communication: Maintain ongoing communication with HQ and the CHP Director, including providing medical updates for monthly executive reports.
Beneficiary Briefings: Lead briefing sessions with beneficiaries and perform other duties as assigned by the Country Administrator or CHP Director.
Education:
Registered Nurse with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Experience:
3 years of experience working with children.
2 years of experience working with an NGO.
Experience in pediatrics and cardiology is essential.
Flexibility to work in an emergency environment.
Skills Required
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Excellent leadership capabilities.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
Flexibility and adaptability to changing circumstances.
