Job Description
The Child Protection Officer plays a key role in ensuring that all organisational programs and operations uphold the highest standards of child safeguarding and protection. Based within the Community & Welfare team and reporting to the Community & Welfare Manager, the role will lead the implementation, monitoring and strengthening of safeguarding systems across the organisation’s education programs and community engagement activities. The role supports the organisation to embed safeguarding, inclusion and child-centred practices across all education programs and community engagement activities.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Safeguarding systems & compliance
- Lead the implementation and continuous strengthening of the organisation’s Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy.
- Ensure safeguarding systems align with ACFID Code of Conduct requirements, organisational policies and relevant Ugandan child protection legislation.
- Ensure clear, well-communicated internal processes are in place for the identification, reporting, documentation and management of safeguarding concerns, including defined escalation pathways and roles for staff involved in safeguarding responses.
- Support the Community & Welfare Manager to undertake robust and rigorous investigations of child protection incidents.
- Support the organisation to maintain strong safeguarding compliance, documentation and reporting systems.
- Contribute to safe recruitment processes, including safeguarding declarations and background checks for staff and volunteers are completed.
Safeguarding Case Management and Coordination
- Act as a safeguarding focal point for child protection concerns raised through organisational programs.
- Work closely with the Social Worker and School Counsellor to ensure appropriate support, response and referrals for children experiencing protection concerns.
- Ensure safeguarding concerns are documented, managed confidentially and addressed in line with organisational procedures.
- Coordinate referrals to appropriate community services or statutory bodies when required.
Training and Capacity Building
- Deliver termly safeguarding and child protection training for staff, teachers, school leaders and community partners.
- Strengthen the capacity of program teams to identify, prevent and respond to safeguarding risks.
- Support schools and community partners to strengthen their own child protection awareness and reporting mechanisms.
- Lead training for staff, teachers and program teams on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) practices, including gender-responsive pedagogy and awareness of gender-related needs such as menstrual health and hygiene, to support safe and inclusive learning environments for all students.
- Promote safeguarding practices that are gender-sensitive and inclusive, recognising and addressing the different risks and barriers faced by girls, boys and vulnerable children.
