About the Program
The African Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Data-Intensive Sciences (ACE Uganda) is pleased to announce two (2) volunteer internship opportunities in Human Genomics, supported by the SHEDS Project in partnership with the Institute for Global Health Sciences (IGHS) at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
This internship offers early-career scientists the opportunity to engage in real-world, data-driven health research, while developing hands-on skills in bioinformatics, health data science, and human genomics.
Position Summary
The selected volunteers will be involved in practical genomic research, including data cleaning, analysis, visualization, and the use of bioinformatics tools in the study of human genomics. The internship also provides mentorship and training in programming and health data science in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Learn and apply basic programming in R, Python, and Bash scripting.
Clean, analyze, and visualize health/genomic data using relevant tools.
Use bioinformatics software to:
Align DNA sequences
Identify genetic variants
Perform basic statistical analyses on genomic datasets
Contribute to the development and documentation of bioinformatics analysis pipelines.
Review and synthesize scientific literature relevant to ongoing project work.
Participate in regular team meetings and give presentations on assigned tasks.
Submit monthly progress reports and a final internship report.
Provide support to ongoing ACE-Uganda projects and activities.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Minimum Education Requirement:
A Bachelor’s degree in one of the following (or related) fields:
Biochemistry
Biomedical Laboratory Technology
Biotechnology
Eligibility Criteria:
Recent graduates (within the past 12 months) or final-year students awaiting graduation in any of the above fields.
Demonstrated interest in health data science, bioinformatics, or structural biology, especially as applied to human genomics.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Eagerness to learn and contribute in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
Clear intention to pursue a career in health data science, bioinformatics, or a related discipline.
