NIRA Warns Against False Information as 10,000+ National IDs Rejected During Uganda Mass Renewal

NIRA Warns Ugandans Against False Information During National ID Mass Renewal

The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has issued a strong warning to citizens who attempt to provide false information during Uganda’s ongoing National ID mass renewal exercise. So far, the system has rejected over 10,000 national IDs out of the 2.5 million processed since the exercise began on May 27, 2025.

NIRA Warns Against False Information

Accurate Information Required for National ID Renewal and Registration

According to NIRA spokesperson Claire Ollama, legal action will be taken against individuals who intentionally submit incorrect or misleading information that does not match their original registration records. “We encourage citizens to follow the correct procedures. Those needing updates should go through the formal change-of-particulars process, rather than trying to register as new applicants,” Ollama emphasized.

The mass renewal effort, currently active at the parish level, allows Ugandans to renew or update their National IDs. Renewal is free for applicants presenting their existing ID, whether original or photocopy. However, specific fees apply for replacements and record updates:

  • Lost ID Replacement: UGX 50,000 (requires valid police letter)

  • Updates/Corrections to Records: UGX 200,000

Priority Renewals and Long-Term Targets

Priority is being given to individuals whose ID cards are due to expire in June 2025. NIRA aims to renew IDs for 15.8 million existing holders and register 17.2 million previously unregistered Ugandans.

Steps for National ID Renewal and First-Time Registration

For ID Renewal:

  • Present your current National ID (original or copy).

  • If lost, present a valid police report confirming the loss.

For First-Time Applicants (18+ years):

  • Provide an LC1 introduction letter, stamped by a GISO/ISO.

  • Letter must include:

  • Full name, date of birth, tribe, clan, nationality.

  • Full names and living status of both parents.

For Applicants Under 18 Years:

  • Provide a photocopy of one parent’s National ID.

  • If both parents are deceased, a blood relative’s National ID is required.

Legal Implications for False ID Information

NIRA reminds all citizens that attempting to register with false details could lead to criminal prosecution. The agency emphasizes the importance of following correct procedures to ensure a smooth and lawful renewal process.
