Makerere University Announces Fully Funded 2025 MSc Scholarships in Biomedical Engineering

Makerere University, through its Biomedical Engineering Unit at the College of Health Sciences, has officially opened applications for the 2025 Master’s scholarships in biomedical engineering and allied disciplines. This exciting opportunity is funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) Fogarty International Center in collaboration with Case Western Reserve University.

The scholarship program is designed to strengthen Uganda’s capacity for medical technology innovation and advance research in biomedical engineering. The initiative aims to nurture a new generation of researchers and professionals equipped to address pressing health challenges through innovative technologies.

Comprehensive Support for One Academic Year at Makerere University

Selected candidates will receive full financial support for up to one academic year of Master of Science studies. The scholarship package includes:

  • Full tuition coverage

  • Monthly living stipends

  • Research-related costs


Awardees will engage in cutting-edge research in areas such as:

  • Biomaterials and drug delivery

  • Point-of-care diagnostics

  • Biomedical imaging

  • Artificial intelligence applications in data analytics



Eligibility Criteria

Applications are encouraged from Master's students in:

  • Technology Innovation and Industrial Development (CEDAT)

  • Computer Science (CoCIS)

  • Immunology and Clinical Microbiology

  • Health Informatics

  • Bioinformatics (College of Health Sciences)

However, students enrolled in closely related disciplines are also eligible. Applicants must:

  • Be Ugandan nationals

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a health-related field from a recognized university

  • Demonstrate strong academic performance in their first year of Master’s studies

  • Select from pre-identified research topics and develop a concept proposal accordingly

Applicants must submit a single PDF file containing:

  • Certified academic transcripts and certificates

  • Two reference letters

  • A motivation statement (maximum 500 words)

  • Curriculum Vitae (maximum four pages)
