St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City — In a historic moment for the Roman Catholic Church, white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel chimney at 6:07 PM local time on May 8, 2025, signaling the election of a new pope. Shortly thereafter, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a 69-year-old Chicago native, was introduced as Pope Leo XIV, becoming the first American to ascend to the papacy in the Church's 2,000-year history .

Pope Leo XIV succeeds the late Pope Francis, who passed away last month at the age of 88. The conclave, consisting of 133 cardinal-electors from around the world, reached the required two-thirds majority on the second day of deliberations.
A Pope with Global Experience
Before his election, Pope Leo XIV served as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, overseeing the appointment of bishops worldwide—a role to which he was appointed by Pope Francis in 2023. His extensive experience includes missionary work in Peru, where he served as Bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023, and leadership as the Prior General of the Augustinian Order from 2001 to 2013.
In his first public address from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV greeted the faithful with the words, “Peace be with you,” emphasizing unity and continuity within the Church.
Significance for the Global Church
Pope Leo XIV's election marks a significant moment for the Catholic Church, reflecting its evolving global identity. His American origins and extensive international experience symbolize a bridge between diverse cultures and traditions within the Church.
As the new pontiff begins his papacy, Catholics worldwide look forward to his leadership in addressing contemporary challenges and guiding the Church into a new era.
