According to preliminary police reports, the Kampala–Gulu Highway accident happened when the Nile Star bus (UBF 614X), heading from Kampala to Gulu, attempted to overtake a Tata Lorry at a dangerous bend. Simultaneously, the Planet Company bus (UAM 045V), coming from the opposite direction, was also overtaking a Toyota Surf.

Police have confirmed that all 63 fatalities were occupants of the involved vehicles. Several survivors sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Kiryandongo Hospital and nearby medical centers. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the Kiryandongo Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination and identification.

Emergency teams and police swiftly responded to the Kampala–Gulu Highway crash, working overnight to rescue victims and clear the wreckage from the busy highway.

Speaking on behalf of the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, SP Michael Kananura, the Police Public Relations Officer, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic Kampala–Gulu Highway accident and called for responsible driving.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wish a quick recovery to the injured,” said SP Kananura. “We urge all motorists to avoid reckless and dangerous overtaking, especially at night. These behaviors continue to cause fatal crashes on our highways.”

This latest Kampala–Gulu Highway crash adds to a worrying trend of fatal accidents along this major transport corridor. Authorities have repeatedly cautioned motorists to observe speed limits, avoid overtaking at blind spots, and drive cautiously during nighttime travel.
