Job Description
This is a contract role for Translators/Interpreters from ALL Ugandan Languages, Kiswahili, French, Mandarin, and German. As a Translator/Interpreter, you will be responsible for providing accurate and efficient translation and interpretation services. This includes translating written documents, transcribing audio recordings, and facilitating communication between English and various Ugandan languages. This is a hybrid role, where you will be based in Kampala but have the flexibility to work remotely. By being selected, you join our large translators team to be able to participate in our ongoing translation projects.
Duties and Responsibilities
Translation Services: Translators convert written texts from one language to another, ensuring that the meaning and context of the original content are accurately conveyed in the target language. This may include translating documents, reports, publications, websites, or marketing materials into various Ugandan languages.
Interpretation Services: Interpreters facilitate communication between speakers of different languages by orally translating spoken messages in real-time. Interpreting services may be provided in various settings, such as meetings, conferences, courtrooms, healthcare facilities, or community events.
Language Proficiency: Translators and interpreters must have a deep understanding of both the source language (e.g., English) and the target Ugandan language(s). They should be proficient in grammar, vocabulary, syntax, idiomatic expressions, and cultural nuances to accurately convey messages across languages.
Cultural Competence: Translators and interpreters need to be culturally competent and sensitive to the cultural norms, customs, and traditions of the languages they work with. Understanding cultural context is essential for producing accurate translations and facilitating effective communication.
Research and Preparation: Translators often research specialized terminology, technical terms, or industry-specific jargon to ensure accurate translations. Interpreters may also prepare in advance for interpreting assignments by familiarizing themselves with relevant subject matter and terminology.
Consecutive Interpretation: In consecutive interpretation, interpreters listen to a speaker's message and then convey it in the target language once the speaker has finished speaking. This method is commonly used in settings such as meetings, interviews, or small group discussions.
Simultaneous Interpretation: In simultaneous interpretation, interpreters translate spoken messages in real-time while the speaker is still speaking. This method is often used in conferences, large meetings, or events where continuous interpretation is required.
Note-Taking: Interpreters may take notes during interpreting assignments to help them recall key points or details when delivering their interpretation. Note-taking skills are essential for maintaining accuracy and coherence in interpreting.
Ethical Standards: Translators and interpreters adhere to professional standards of ethics, confidentiality, and impartiality in their work. They maintain confidentiality of sensitive information, avoid conflicts of interest, and provide impartial interpretation without bias or personal opinions.
