Assessing the needs and goals of students and developing individualized plans to help them achieve their potential. Providing counselling services to students who are facing academic, emotional, social or behavioural challenges. Referring students to appropriate resources and services within or outside the school, such as tutors, mentors, health care providers, etc. Collaborating with teachers, parents, administrators and other stakeholders to ensure the well-being and success of students. Organizing and facilitating workshops, seminars, groups and events on topics such as study skills, stress management, career exploration, etc. Maintaining records and documentation of counselling sessions and interventions. Following ethical and professional standards and adhering to relevant policies and regulations.
To conduct individual and group counselling sessions with students who need help with academic, emotional, behavioural or interpersonal issues.
To collaborate with teachers, parents, administrators and other stakeholders to identify the needs and strengths of students and to develop appropriate interventions and referrals.
To design and implement prevention and intervention programs that promote the well-being, resilience and success of students.
To provide crisis intervention and follow-up services to students who are experiencing trauma, violence, abuse, grief, loss or other emergencies.
To maintain accurate and confidential records of counselling sessions and interventions.
To adhere to the ethical standards and codes of conduct of the counselling profession and the school policies.

Empathy
A student counsellor should be able to understand and share the feelings and perspectives of the students they work with, without being judgmental or biased.
Communication skills:
A student counsellor should be able to communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers and other stakeholders, using appropriate verbal and non-verbal cues, listening actively and responding clearly and respectfully.
Problem-solving skills:
A student counsellor should be able to help students identify and overcome the challenges they face, using evidence-based strategies and interventions, and collaborating with other professionals when needed.
Ethical awareness:
A student counsellor should be aware of the ethical principles and standards that guide their practice, such as confidentiality, informed consent, respect for diversity and autonomy, and avoid any conflicts of interest or dual relationships.
Continuous learning:
A student counsellor should be committed to updating their knowledge and skills through ongoing professional development, research and supervision, and seeking feedback and support from their peers and mentors.
