Staff Surveyors are professionals responsible for conducting land surveys and providing accurate measurements and data related to land boundaries, topography, and construction sites.

  • Conducting Surveys: Staff Surveyors conduct various types of surveys, including boundary surveys, topographic surveys, construction surveys, and land subdivision surveys. They use surveying equipment such as total stations, GPS receivers, and drones to collect accurate measurements and data.

  • Boundary Determination: They identify and establish property boundaries, using legal descriptions, historical records, and physical markers. This involves researching property records, interpreting legal documents, and resolving boundary disputes.

  • Topographic Mapping: Staff Surveyors create detailed topographic maps that depict the natural and man-made features of a site, including elevation changes, contours, bodies of water, and vegetation. These maps are used for engineering, design, and planning purposes.

  • Construction Layout: They provide construction layout services to ensure that structures, roads, utilities, and other features are built according to design plans and specifications. This involves setting stakes, markers, and reference points to guide construction activities.

  • Data Analysis: Staff Surveyors analyze survey data to calculate distances, angles, elevations, and other measurements. They use specialized software to process and interpret survey data, generate reports, and create maps and drawings.

  • Quality Control: They ensure the accuracy and reliability of survey data by performing quality control checks, verifying measurements, and identifying and correcting errors or discrepancies.

  • Client Communication: Staff Surveyors communicate with clients, project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to understand project requirements, provide updates on survey progress, and address any concerns or questions.

  • Regulatory Compliance: They ensure that surveying activities comply with relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards, including surveying standards established by professional organizations and government agencies.

  • Education: A bachelor's degree in surveying, geomatics, civil engineering, or a related field is typically required for Staff Surveyor positions. Some employers may prefer candidates with a master's degree or professional certification.

  • Licensure: Staff Surveyors must be licensed or certified to practice surveying in their jurisdiction. This usually involves passing a series of exams, including the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam and the Principles and Practice of Surveying (PS) exam, and meeting experience requirements.

  • Experience: Prior experience in surveying or related fieldwork is usually required, typically ranging from several years to a decade or more, depending on the level of the position. Experience with various types of surveys and surveying equipment is beneficial.

  • Technical Skills: Staff Surveyors should have a strong understanding of surveying principles, methods, and techniques, as well as proficiency in using surveying equipment and software. They should also be familiar with relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards.

  • Analytical Skills: They should have strong analytical and problem-solving skills to interpret survey data, analyze complex terrain and boundary issues, and resolve discrepancies or inconsistencies.

  • Communication Skills: Effective communication skills are essential for interacting with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders, both verbally and in writing. Staff Surveyors should be able to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely to non-technical audiences.

  • Attention to Detail: Given the precision required in surveying work, Staff Surveyors must have a keen attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate and reliable results.

  • Physical Fitness: Surveying often involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and terrain, sometimes requiring physical exertion such as walking long distances, carrying equipment, or working at heights. Good physical fitness and mobility are important for performing fieldwork safely and effectively.

  • Teamwork: Staff Surveyors often work as part of a team, collaborating with other surveyors, engineers, architects, and construction professionals to support project goals and objectives. They should be able to work effectively in a team environment and contribute to collective success.

  • Professionalism: Staff Surveyors should adhere to high ethical standards and demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and accountability in their work. They should also be committed to continuous learning and professional development to stay current with advancements in surveying technology and practices.

Applications should be submitted in triplicates filled in own hand writing on Public Service Commission Form 3 (Revised 2008) to the Secretary, District Service Commission, P.O. Box 1, Apac. Serving Officers should route their applications through their Heads of Departments or responsible officers for endorsement who should be informed of the closing date to avoid delay.
