Job Description
Join our young team as senior operations manager/consultant and be part of an exciting new start-up in urban food production! Urban Greens is a young and ambitious urban farming company in Uganda. Urban Greens is looking for a seasoned operations professional. The manager will implement part of a donor funded project and build the foundations for scale alongside the Managing Director. Yu are excited about the opportunity and keen to play a pivotal role in building a new business and new paradigm for urban food production in developing cities like Kampala.
About us
Urban Greens is a for-profit social enterprise founded with the vision that everyone is entitled to food security (quantity & quality). We believe that bringing food production into urban spaces makes sense since it improves the transparency of the food value chain. It allows people to take control of the food they eat and improve their overall quality of life and health. It generates income for urban households (especially women) and small business And last but not least, urban farming reduces environmental impact by growing in underutilised spaces close to where food is consumed.
Urban Greens has developed standardized aquaponics equipment and is currently moving from R&D to pilots with clients. The company currently has 6 employees and operates a small demo farm in Kampala. Recent market outreach has revealed significant market potential for urban aquaponics with a number of pre-qualified leads.
Role Description
This is a consultant role for a Senior Operations Manager. You will be responsible for developing and overseeing day-to-day operations, analysing data, hiring the right team, managing customer experience, and ensuring smooth operations. You will implement a partially donor funded project, which includes the installation of small-scale aquaponics systems in Kampala. This is an on-site role located in Kampala.
Duties and Responsibilities
Operational Strategy Development:
Develop and implement operational strategies aligned with the organization's goals.
Analyze market trends and operational performance to inform strategic planning.
Identify opportunities for growth and improvement in operational processes.
Process Improvement:
Evaluate existing operational processes and identify inefficiencies.
Develop and implement process improvement initiatives to enhance productivity and quality.
Utilize methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, or Total Quality Management (TQM) to streamline operations.
Project Management:
Lead and manage key operational projects from conception through to completion.
Develop project plans, set timelines, and allocate resources effectively.
Monitor project progress and ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
Performance Monitoring and Reporting:
Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to measure operational effectiveness.
Prepare regular performance reports and present findings to senior management.
Use data and analytics to drive decision-making and operational improvements.
Team Leadership and Development:
Lead, mentor, and develop operational teams to achieve high performance.
Foster a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.
Conduct performance appraisals and provide feedback to team members.
Resource Management:
Optimize the use of resources, including personnel, technology, and materials.
Ensure efficient allocation and utilization of resources to meet operational needs.
Develop and manage budgets for operational departments.
Quality Assurance:
Implement and maintain quality assurance standards and procedures.
Monitor compliance with quality standards and address any deviations.
Drive initiatives to maintain and improve product or service quality.
Risk Management:
Identify and assess operational risks and develop mitigation strategies.
Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
Develop and implement contingency plans to address potential disruptions.
Customer Relationship Management:
Maintain strong relationships with key customers and stakeholders.
Ensure operational processes meet or exceed customer expectations.
Address customer issues and concerns promptly and effectively.
Technology Integration:
Oversee the implementation of new technologies to improve operational efficiency.
Ensure that technological solutions are aligned with operational needs.
Manage the integration of technology into daily operations and train staff on new systems.
Supply Chain Management:
Optimize supply chain processes to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.
Manage relationships with suppliers and vendors to ensure timely delivery of goods and services.
Oversee inventory management and logistics to maintain optimal stock levels.
Change Management:
Lead change management initiatives to improve operational processes.
Communicate changes effectively to all stakeholders.
Provide support and training to employees during transitions.

Qualifications and Competencies
MBA or MSc in Agricultural Sciences.
15+ years of experience in developing and deploying agricultural solutions (products, financing and/or services) in the global south, with significant time focused on and in sub-Saharan Africa in general and ideally Uganda in specific.
Proven track record in developing and building operations from small beginnings.
Experience in working with Aquaponics and Hydroponics is preferred, but not a must.
Experience in implementing donor funded projects in a for profit setting.
Proven project management experience (formal qualification is preferred).
Experience in food handling and processing is preferred.
Proven ability to build and manage motivated teams.
Ugandan nationals or residents are preferred. For foreign nationals, the right to work in Uganda.
Conditions
Starting Date: July 1st 2024 or as soon as possible after.
Available budget: USD 4,000-5,000 per month, subject to availability and experience.
Expected availability: 28 to 40 hours per week (at 32 hours and up we are open to discussing employment should that be preferred).
Time period: 1 year with option to extend, depending on performance and funding.
Standard contractor (or employment) terms and conditions will apply.
