Job Description
The Senior Legal Counsel will be responsible for managing legal risks across all business units, including commercial transactions, litigation, and regulatory compliance. The individual will ensure that the company’s legal interests are protected in all contractual agreements and disputes. The role also involves overseeing external legal counsel, providing legal advisory services, and supporting the company’s governance and regulatory compliance structures. The position plays a key role in preventive lawyering by identifying potential legal risks and proposing actionable solutions.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Serve as the main legal advisor across Kenya Airways’ network
Draft, review, and negotiate commercial contracts, including joint ventures, financing, and procurement agreements
Manage all legal disputes and litigation matters at both group and country levels
Liaise with and supervise external legal counsel
Ensure the company is compliant with relevant laws, including aviation and competition laws
Prepare governance-related documents such as board resolutions, proxy forms, and powers of attorney
Manage intellectual property rights in coordination with the marketing department and external legal advisers
Provide competition law advice and conduct compliance training
Oversee company registration updates and license renewals across international jurisdictions
Lead and mentor junior legal staff, ensuring continuous professional development and alignment with company objectives
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LL.B) from a recognized institution
Postgraduate Diploma from Kenya School of Law (KSL)
Master’s degree (LL.M or MBA) and Certified Secretary (CS) qualification is an added advantage
At least 8 years of post-admission experience in commercial law or litigation
In-depth understanding of aviation laws and regulatory frameworks
Proven experience in corporate governance, risk mitigation, and regulatory compliance
Excellent communication, analytical, and negotiation skills
Experience in managing and mentoring legal teams
