Job Description
The reporter-researcher will assist in covering Kenya and the broader East African region across various formats — print, digital, and audio. Responsibilities include conducting research, interviews, and field reporting; identifying emerging stories and trends; and assisting with story development and accuracy. The candidate will be expected to monitor local news, social media, and regional developments; translate between Swahili and English; and support the chief Africa correspondent with both editorial and administrative reporting tasks. The role demands strong writing skills, news judgment, organizational ability, and a deep understanding of East African socio-political dynamics.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Collaborate with the chief Africa correspondent to identify and develop impactful stories
Conduct interviews, observations, and field research
Translate between Swahili and English as needed
Monitor local news media and social channels for developments
Write summaries and weekly news roundups for the bureau
Assist with fact-checking and maintaining accuracy in reporting
Cultivate and manage relationships with sources across the region
Contribute ideas and updates to editors and other correspondents
Occasionally work weekends and public holidays based on news demands
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Fluency in English is essential; proficiency in Swahili and at least one Kenyan vernacular is preferred
Strong writing and research skills
Good news judgment and knowledge of East African politics, culture, and current events
Experience using news-gathering tools, social media platforms, and content management systems
Familiarity with research tools like Factiva and Nexis
Meticulous organizational and time-management skills
Ability to work independently and under pressure
Demonstrated commitment to journalistic integrity and accuracy
