Job Description
The Remote Technician will ensure safe and effective operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of remote mining systems such as Sandvik and RCT automation technologies and underground (UG) machines including Sandvik and CAT fleets. Key responsibilities include fault-finding, diagnostics, component rebuilds, inspections, and supporting mobile equipment performance. The role requires collaboration with the Maintenance Foreman, adherence to OEM standards and safety protocols, and participation in skills development programs. The technician will also implement new technology, maintain compliance, manage documentation, and ensure operational excellence aligned with Barrick’s values and zero-harm culture.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Maintain, repair, and diagnose electrical and remote system faults on mining machinery
Perform routine inspections and ensure compliance with safety and OEM procedures
Support underground mobile fleet maintenance and minimize downtime
Coordinate tasks and report to the Mobile Automation Foreman
Enforce safe working practices and hazard identification protocols
Conduct component rebuilds and equipment change-outs
Participate in automation and maintenance training programs
Implement new technologies and support continuous improvement
Monitor and eliminate waste in underground auto-electrical activities
Maintain data and documentation in line with company standards
Provide technical support and clear communication to stakeholders
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Qualifications
Technician Certificate or mechanical/engineering trade qualification from a recognized institution
Mechanical trade certification (added advantage)
Experience
Minimum 5 years’ experience in auto-electrical maintenance in underground mining
Competencies & Skills
Strong understanding of remote systems (Sandvik, RCT) and UG mining equipment
Expertise in troubleshooting electrical and automation faults
Knowledge of maintenance planning and scheduling
Strong safety awareness and risk assessment skills
Excellent communication skills in English (written & verbal)
Computer proficiency (MS Excel, Word, Access)
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks
