Job Description
The News Editor will serve as the editorial and operational lead for Focus on Africa, managing TV, radio/podcast, and digital outputs. You will shape the program’s vision, ensure journalistic excellence, and oversee story development from conception to broadcast. This role demands strong leadership, creativity, and the ability to navigate diverse narratives across Africa. The successful candidate will coordinate with global and local BBC teams, manage budgets, develop editorial workflows, and mentor team members. A key part of this role is to grow the program’s reach while ensuring it resonates with both local and international audiences.

How to Apply
Lead the editorial vision for Focus on Africa across TV, radio, and digital platforms.
Ensure timely, accurate, and engaging content that upholds BBC’s journalistic standards.
Collaborate with reporters, correspondents, and producers globally.
Oversee end-to-end story development including fact-checking and production quality.
Integrate digital storytelling techniques to engage younger audiences.
Encourage innovation and experimentation with new formats and technologies.
Mentor and develop editorial and production staff.
Coordinate closely with other departments like Production, Marketing, and Digital.
Manage program budgets and resource allocation efficiently.
Champion diversity and inclusion within teams and output.
Handle editorial complaints, compliance, and legal issues related to content.
Maintain strong stakeholder relationships and oversee complex operational workflows.
Proven senior editorial experience in multimedia news production (TV, radio, digital), particularly with African content.
Exceptional communication and writing skills in English (additional African languages are a plus).
Experience launching or developing new programs or podcasts with measurable success.
Strategic thinker with a strong ability to set and achieve long-term goals.
Excellent judgment on breaking news and in-depth feature stories.
Strong leadership skills with a track record of managing diverse, distributed teams.
Deep knowledge of African socio-political dynamics.
Proficiency in video/audio editing and digital content strategies.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Skilled at handling editorial policy, complaints, and legal compliance.
Experience managing program budgets and operations.
