Job Description
The Nephrology Nurse will offer comprehensive renal care by preparing and administering dialysis treatments, assessing patient conditions, managing complications, and maintaining accurate medical records. The role involves collaborating with physicians and other healthcare professionals to support optimal patient outcomes, educating patients and families on renal health and self-care practices, and enforcing high infection control standards. The nurse will also ensure the proper operation and maintenance of dialysis machines and water treatment systems while participating in quality improvement and clinical audit initiatives.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Prepare, initiate, monitor, and complete dialysis treatment for patients per clinical protocols
Assess and record pre-, intra-, and post-dialysis patient conditions including vital signs and fluid balance
Administer prescribed medications and therapies related to renal care
Respond to treatment-related complications and emergencies such as hypotension or vascular access issues
Set up, prime, operate, and maintain dialysis machines and related equipment
Ensure vascular access patency and maintain aseptic techniques during cannulation and disconnection
Support nephrologists during patient procedures and reviews
Maintain accurate and timely patient documentation and treatment records
Educate patients and families on renal health management, dietary needs, and lifestyle adjustments
Uphold infection prevention and control measures within the dialysis unit
Participate in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, and quality improvement initiatives
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Nursing from a recognized institution
Higher Diploma in Nephrology Nursing from an accredited institution
Registered and licensed by the Nursing Council of Kenya
Minimum 2 years clinical nursing experience, with at least 1 year in renal or critical care preferred
BLS and ACLS certification an added advantage
Proficiency in dialysis procedures and equipment operation
Excellent clinical assessment and emergency response skills
Compassionate, patient-centered approach and strong communication skills
