Job Description

The Mental Health Specialist will be based at the UGHE Butaro Campus and will oversee mental health programs for students and staff. Key responsibilities include conducting mental health awareness and training programs, diagnosing and treating mental health disorders, providing counseling services, maintaining confidential health records, and collaborating with other healthcare providers on campus. The specialist will also organize wellness activities, provide crisis intervention, and ensure that students receive appropriate mental health care and referrals when needed.

How to Apply

  • Lead mental health promotion, prevention, curative, and recovery programs on campus

  • Prepare and conduct mental and psycho-social orientation and training programs for the campus community

  • Assess and diagnose mental health conditions among students and staff, including stress, depression, anxiety, and other disorders

  • Provide counseling, therapy, and psychological support to students and staff

  • Collaborate with faculty and staff for early identification and intervention of at-risk students

  • Administer treatments based on existing Rwandan mental health guidelines

  • Maintain confidential health records and documentation

  • Facilitate group therapy and individual counseling sessions

  • Organize and coordinate campus wellness activities and health promotion initiatives

  • Provide crisis intervention and emergency mental health support

  • Refer clients to specialists when necessary (psychiatrists, physicians, peer mentors, etc.)

  • Participate in student orientation and advisory services

  • Conduct mental health assessments and develop individualized treatment plans

  • Monitor students’ social and environmental stressors, including peer pressure, workload, financial difficulties, and other mental well-being factors

Academic and Professional Requirements:

  • Master’s degree (MSc) in Clinical Psychology

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in counseling and clinical mental health services

  • Experience in higher education mental health care is an advantage

  • Prior experience working with youth and multicultural communities as a counselor or mental health provider

  • Experience managing health records and therapy documentation

  • Fluency in English and Kinyarwanda (French proficiency is an advantage)

Personal Competencies:

  • Strong active listening and counseling skills

  • Ability to work within UGHE’s schedule and policies

  • Strong communication skills and ability to provide updates on cases and interventions

  • High level of accessibility, approachability, and visibility with students

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills

  • Commitment to ethical counseling practices and confidentiality
