Job Description
The Mechanical Fitter will be responsible for maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of underground mobile mining equipment to ensure reliable and cost-effective operations. The role involves executing preventative maintenance schedules, performing fault-finding and equipment diagnostics, minimizing downtime, and ensuring maintenance tasks comply with Barrick’s safety protocols and operational standards. The Mechanical Fitter will work closely with the Underground Maintenance Supervisor to support continuous operations, manage repair quality, and foster a proactive safety culture. The role demands urgency, technical precision, and the ability to support mining operations with minimal disruption.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Maintain and repair underground mining equipment and machinery
Conduct diagnostics and fault-finding on mechanical systems
Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance
Ensure equipment is maintained safely and cost-effectively
Support maintenance planning and execution based on production priorities
Monitor equipment performance and reduce downtime
Comply with Barrick’s safety procedures and promote safe work practices
Identify hazards and conduct Job Safety Analysis (JSA)
Support accident and incident investigations
Assist in induction and training of new maintenance personnel
Ensure maintenance activities align with budget and schedule
Provide accurate reporting to the Underground Maintenance Supervisor
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Qualifications
Technician Certificate or related mechanical trade qualification from a recognised institution
Mechanical Trade Certification preferred
Experience
Minimum 5 years’ experience in mechanical maintenance of underground mining equipment
Hands-on experience with Sandvik and Caterpillar machinery highly preferred
Competencies & Skills
Expertise in servicing and rebuilding underground mobile equipment
Strong diagnostics and problem-solving skills
Strong awareness of safety systems and hazard control principles
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
Ability to work effectively with diverse teams
