Job Description

Library attendants, also known as library aides or library assistants, provide support services in libraries to help ensure smooth operations and assist library patrons. Their duties and requirements can vary depending on the size and type of library,

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Circulation Services: Library attendants assist patrons with checking materials in and out, renewing items, and issuing library cards. They may also process holds, reserves, and interlibrary loans.

  • Shelving and Shelf Maintenance: They organize and shelve library materials such as books, magazines, CDs, and DVDs according to library classification systems. They also ensure that materials are arranged neatly and that shelves are tidy and orderly.

  • Collection Maintenance: Library attendants help with inventory management by monitoring the condition of materials, identifying damaged or missing items, and conducting shelf-reading to ensure items are in their proper place.

  • Assisting Patrons: They provide basic assistance to library patrons, including locating materials, answering general inquiries, and directing patrons to appropriate library resources or staff members for further assistance.

  • Library Technology Support: Library attendants may assist patrons with using library computers, printers, scanners, and other technology equipment. They may also troubleshoot minor technical issues and provide basic instruction on library databases or software applications.

  • Maintaining Library Spaces: This includes tasks such as tidying up study areas, organizing displays, and ensuring that furniture and equipment are clean and in good condition. They may also assist with setting up for library programs or events.
