Job Description

Job Title:  Legal Officer

Organisation: Uganda Baati

Duty Station: Kampala, Uganda


The main purpose of the position is to handle all legal and compliance matters in which the Company is involved. The Legal Officer will assist the Legal and Compliance Manager and perform various legal tasks to support the company’s operations.

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

Legal.

  • Assist in providing of legal advice, legal briefs and opinion to senior management

  • Liaising with external lawyers to facilitate collection of evidence and preparation of information related to court matters.

  • Work with the Legal Manager to ensure that the company`s commercial, contractual and other legal interests are adequately protected.

  • Prepare reports and analysis of internal cases, results and timings including monthly updates for litigation matters.

  • Support in the administration of licenses and permits including maintenance of company registers.


Compliance

  • Ensure that the company is in compliance with regulations by providing necessary information to national, regional, and local officials.

  • Assist in reviewing, implementation and enforcement of compliance tools, company procedures and policies.

  • Advise on legislative requirements for compliance with international and governing law

  • Maintain registers; compliance, risk, contracts and licenses/ permits etc for compliance purposes.

  • Assist in carrying out internal investigations and case management as and when called upon

  • Support in legal trainings to all staff


Tax Matters

  • Verify that all tax rules, regulations, and practices are followed.

  • Prepare and review legal documents related to various tax matters

  • Support internal and external teams to represent the company in matters before URA, Courts of Law and Tax Appeals Tribunal.

  • Stay updated with new tax regulations, rulings, and legislations and train internal staff.


Data Protection

  • Act as point of contact for the Data Protection related matters.

  • Training and enforcement of the Data protection laws and company policies.

  • Manage input, retrieve, update and destruction of documents in archives


Cost Control

  • Assist in preparation and monitoring of department budget

  • Manage payment approval process and follow up on departmental payments


Secretarial

  • Undertake responsibilities of the secretary to internal meetings as required.

  • Assist in the preparation of board meetings.

  • Undertake administrative duties and other duties as may be assigned.

 

Working conditions

  • Working environment requires that the holder to wear PPEs for safety reasons.

  • Office bound / on-site / travel/ May be required to travel

  • The company may choose to relocate to holder to branches or other sister offices as and when needed

  • Willing to work extended hours to accomplish job roles

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

  • An honours bachelor’s degree in law (LLB) from a recognized academic institution.

  • Enrolment as an Advocate of the High Court

  • Possession of a Valid Practicing Certificate

  • A minimum of two (02) years’ experience in legal practice and in-house legal counsel in a reputable organization or law firm.

  • An impeccable record of integrity


Qualifications as an added advantage:

  • Post Graduate Diploma in Tax and Revenue Administration

  • Proven knowledge of the Tax laws in Uganda and other laws specific to a commercial environment

  • Demonstrated practice on general tax laws; and regulatory analysis/compliance in tax laws.


Key competencies and skills:

  • Detail Oriented, Conflict resolution skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to build a network of key relationships

  • Understanding Legal Terminology and Documentation.

  • Multi-Tasking and Ability to work under pressure

  • Skilled legal researcher with ability to use computer-based and non-computer-based legal, technical, and scientific research

  • Possession of strong negotiation and networking skills

  • Assertive, results oriented with proven integrity and confidentiality in executing duties.
