Job Description
The Lead Data Scientist will report to the Head of Software and lead the data strategy across the business. This role requires a balance of technical expertise, leadership, and strategic thinking to manage data-driven projects from ideation to execution. The individual will oversee the development of machine learning models, support operational improvements, and promote a data-driven culture across departments. Responsibilities also include developing insights through deep analytics, building a capable data science team, and collaborating with engineering to manage data infrastructure and governance.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
A. Data Strategy & Leadership
Develop and execute company-wide data strategies aligned with operational and commercial goals.
Build and mentor a high-performing data science team.
Foster a culture of data-driven decision-making.
Identify critical problems and translate them into data science projects.
B. Model Development & Deployment
Build and deploy machine learning models for:
Credit risk assessment using traditional and alternative data
Predictive maintenance for electric buses
Fleet and driver optimization
Route scheduling and demand forecasting
Implement MLOps best practices for model lifecycle management.
Ensure ethical use of AI and transparency in algorithms.
C. Data Analysis & Insights
Conduct exploratory data analysis and develop performance dashboards.
Build internal teams’ analytical capacity to decentralize insights.
Perform ad hoc analyses for strategic support.
D. Data Infrastructure & Governance
Collaborate with engineering on data pipelines, architecture, and warehousing.
Ensure data quality, integrity, and compliance with data protection laws.
Support scalable data infrastructure development.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education & Certifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, or related field.
Experience
5+ years in data science, with 2+ years in a leadership role.
Strong track record of deploying machine learning models in production.
Industry experience in fintech, mobility, or public transport is an added advantage.
Technical Skills
Proficient in Python (e.g., TensorFlow, Pandas, scikit-learn), SQL
Familiar with AWS cloud platform and big data tools
Experience in credit scoring models and alternative data use
Familiarity with Kenya's public transport sector is a plus.
Soft Skills
Excellent problem-solving, communication, and presentation skills
Strong organizational and project management abilities
Ability to lead, motivate, and collaborate with cross-functional teams
Fast learner with a growth mindset and proactive attitude
