About the Organisation
The Medical Research Council (MRC UK) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts.

Reports to: Senior Laboratory Technologist
The position holder will perform laboratory tests and report results of the laboratory procedures performed according to standard operating procedures (SOP). Participate in, Interpretation & implement study analytical plans for new studies, promote GCLP compliance, sample management, involvement in training, promote health and safety, document management and report writing and be responsible for laboratory equipment and maintenance.

How to Apply
Principal duties;
Performing of laboratory tests and other procedures in accordance to the approved standard operating procedures found in the Ipassport platform;
Writing and reviewing of standard operating procedures in accordance to the manufacturer guide;
Prepares reagents, chemicals and culture media where applicable for laboratory use;
Performing of the Internal Quality Control and External Quality assurance as per schedule;
Sample reception and entry in lab ware LIMS;
Ensuring timely release of results within their expected Turn Around Time;
Charging of all work done in Ms dynamics;
Cleaning and disinfecting equipment and document on equipment cleaning log;
Tracking equipment servicing requirements and notify the senior technologist;
Monitoring temperatures and record on temperature log;
Assisting in capacity building through demonstrating practical procedures to new staff and student attachments;
Ensuring proper waste segregation management and autoclaving before incineration for disposal; and,
Follow up on both internal and external audits findings and have non-conformities closed timely.
Financial Management;
Maintains reagent stock records to avoid stock outs/ overstocking, both which can lead to financial loss;
Monitors equipment functioning, service & reports malfunctioning equipment; and,
No financial signatory responsibility.

Minimum of a second-class bachelor’s degree in biomedical laboratory technology (or equivalent);
GCLP training/ current Allied Health Professions licence;
At least two years’ experience in biomedical laboratory and working to GCLP standards;
Previous experience in working in a laboratory clinical trials environment;
Extensive practical experience across the major medical laboratory disciplines;
Experience of GCLP & IATA;
Experience interacting with different departments;
Experience analysing a wide range of samples for and on behalf of the Unit;
Managing and supporting different teams;
Linkage with external regulatory agencies;
Working in a research environment;
Demonstrable experience in administration and resource management;
Should possess knowledge of GCP/GCLP or other regulatory environments in the workplace;
Knowledge of safety regulations;
Ability to show initiative, problem solve and make independent decisions;
High quality training and supervision to staff and students;
Lead quality assurance programs;
Technical expertise and leadership;
Independent assay development & troubleshooting of new procedures;
Should possess excellent organisational skills;
Good communication skills in English;
Ability to take the initiative and solve problems;
Excellent interpersonal and teamworking skills with the ability to work with staff at all levels; and,
Capability to work well with colleagues from other departments.
