Job Description
The Junior Accountant (Accounting Associate) will play a key role in the day-to-day financial operations of PHR’s Kenya office, specifically supporting accounting responsibilities aligned with U.S. standards. The ideal candidate will be experienced in nonprofit accounting, possess familiarity with U.S. tax and audit processes, and demonstrate advanced proficiency with accounting software including Sage Intacct, Bill.com, and Spend and Expense. This role will require working hours that align closely with U.S. Eastern Standard Time. The accountant will collaborate with the U.S.-based finance team to ensure timely, compliant, and accurate financial reporting and contribute to organizational audits and budget tracking.

Support U.S.-based accounting operations and ensure proper documentation of all financial transactions
Maintain accurate general ledger records and reconcile accounts in compliance with U.S. GAAP
Manage cross-border financial processes and ensure all transactions meet compliance standards
Utilize accounting software such as Sage Intacct, Bill.com, and Spend and Expense for daily financial activities
Prepare documentation for IRS Form 990 filings and assist with non-profit financial audits
Collaborate with the finance team to support timely budget preparation, forecasting, and reporting
Ensure all expenditures are documented and properly classified
Provide financial insights and recommendations based on analytical reviews
Uphold the organization’s financial integrity and security policies
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
Experience:
At least 2 years of relevant accounting experience
Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and nonprofit financial operations
Experience in U.S. nonprofit audits and IRS Form 990 is an advantage
Skills and Competencies:
Proficiency in accounting systems including Sage Intacct, Bill.com, and Spend and Expense
Strong analytical and numerical skills
Attention to detail and high level of accuracy
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work U.S. Eastern Standard Time hours
Strong interpersonal skills and adaptability in a dynamic working environment
