The Irrigation Supervisor is responsible for managing and overseeing all irrigation systems on the farm. This includes the planning, installation, maintenance, and operation of irrigation equipment to ensure efficient water usage and crop health. The supervisor ensures that irrigation practices align with farm needs, weather conditions, and sustainability goals.

Oversee Irrigation Systems: Manage and supervise the daily operations of irrigation systems, including drip, sprinkler, and flood irrigation.
System Maintenance: Ensure that all irrigation equipment (pumps, pipes, valves, sprinklers, etc.) is properly maintained and repaired as needed. Troubleshoot any issues that arise with irrigation systems.
Water Management: Monitor water usage and ensure the appropriate amount of water is applied to crops. Adjust irrigation schedules based on weather conditions and crop needs.
Team Supervision: Supervise and train a team of irrigation technicians, providing guidance on proper irrigation techniques and ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and safely.
Field Monitoring: Conduct regular inspections of irrigated fields to ensure uniform water distribution, diagnose issues like uneven watering, and make necessary adjustments.
Record Keeping and Reporting: Maintain records of irrigation schedules, system performance, water usage, and maintenance activities. Prepare regular reports for farm management on irrigation efficiency and water usage.
Water Conservation: Develop and implement water-saving practices to ensure the efficient use of water resources. Work to minimize water wastage and promote sustainable irrigation practices.
Collaboration with Other Departments: Work closely with farm managers, agronomists, and other supervisors to align irrigation schedules with crop growth stages, pest management, and weather forecasts.
Budgeting and Resource Management: Assist in budgeting for irrigation resources, including water, equipment, and labor. Help to manage irrigation costs and ensure the system operates within the budget.
Safety and Compliance: Ensure all irrigation operations comply with farm safety regulations, environmental laws, and industry standards. Ensure that team members are trained in safety procedures.
Innovation: Stay updated on new irrigation technologies and best practices to improve efficiency and sustainability on the farm.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Job Requirements:
Diploma/Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture/Horticulture
Experience with vegetable production (peppers & other Solanaceous vegetables)
Proficiency in English, Luganda, and/or Kiswahili
Willingness to live on a remote farm
Experience: Previous experience in irrigation management or a related field, with at least 2-3 years in a supervisory role, is preferred.
Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of various irrigation systems, water management practices, and crop water needs.
Technical Skills: Familiarity with irrigation technology, including pumps, drip systems, controllers, and moisture sensors.
Problem-Solving Skills: Strong ability to identify and resolve issues with irrigation systems, water distribution, or equipment.
Leadership: Proven ability to lead a team, delegate tasks, and maintain team productivity.
Physical Stamina: Ability to work long hours outdoors, in various weather conditions, and handle physical labor when needed.
Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills for coordinating with the farm team, reporting issues, and maintaining records.
Attention to Detail: Ability to monitor and track water usage, identify inefficiencies, and make adjustments when needed.
