Job Description

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

This is a full-time, on-site role for a Professional Gardener at Arcadia Suites Hotel Kampala. The Professional Gardener will be responsible for landscape maintenance, gardening, landscaping, irrigation, and garden design.

They will ensure the hotel grounds are well-maintained, aesthetically pleasing, and in line with the hotel's overall ambiance.

Planting and Maintenance: Planting, watering, fertilizing, and pruning trees, shrubs, flowers, and other plants according to seasonal needs and growth patterns. This includes maintaining flower beds, borders, and lawns.
Weeding and Pest Control: Removing weeds and invasive plants manually or using appropriate tools. Implementing pest control measures such as applying pesticides or natural remedies to control pests and diseases.
Lawn Care: Mowing, edging, aerating, and fertilizing lawns to maintain their health and appearance. Seeding or sodding bare patches and ensuring proper irrigation.
Soil Preparation: Preparing soil for planting by tilling, amending with compost or fertilizers, and ensuring proper drainage.
Pruning and Trimming: Pruning trees, shrubs, and hedges to promote healthy growth, maintain shape, and improve aesthetics. Trimming back overgrown or dead foliage to enhance plant health and appearance.

Equipment Maintenance: Cleaning and maintaining gardening tools and equipment such as lawn mowers, trimmers, and hand tools to ensure they are in good working condition.
Watering: Monitoring soil moisture levels and watering plants as needed, adjusting watering schedules based on weather conditions and plant requirements.
Knowledge of Plants: Identifying common plant species, understanding their growth habits, and recognizing signs of disease, nutrient deficiencies, or pest infestations.
Safety: Adhering to safety protocols and guidelines when using equipment, handling chemicals, or working at heights. Ensuring a safe environment for oneself and others.
Communication: Communicating with clients, supervisors, or colleagues to understand their preferences, provide updates on work progress, and address any concerns or issues.
Environmental Awareness: Practicing environmentally friendly gardening techniques such as composting, water conservation, and using organic fertilizers and pest control methods whenever possible.
Continuous Learning: Staying informed about the latest gardening trends, techniques, and best practices through reading, attending workshops, or participating in professional development opportunities.
