Job Description
Job Title: Environmental Officer
Organisation: Green Power International (GPI)
Duty Station: Bugolobi, Kampala, Uganda
We are seeking an Environmental Officer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in environmental science, with hands-on experience in Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) implementation and monitoring. The role involves ensuring that our solar projects comply with environmental regulations, promoting sustainability, and contributing to the success of our environmental management initiatives.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Environmental Monitoring:
Conduct regular environmental monitoring and assessments on all solar energy projects to ensure compliance with the company’s Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP). Ensure that any potential environmental risks are identified and mitigated in a timely manner.
ESMP Implementation:
Support the implementation of the Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) for all ongoing projects, ensuring that environmental aspects are incorporated into project design, execution, and decommissioning.
Reporting and Documentation:
Prepare and maintain accurate environmental reports, documentation, and records.
Ensure that all reports are submitted on time and are in compliance with local regulations and company policies.
Compliance and Risk Management:
Monitor and ensure adherence to environmental laws, standards, and regulations.
Provide guidance on best environmental practices and ensure the company’s projects operate within legal and environmental boundaries.
Training and Awareness:
Provide environmental training to staff, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure awareness and compliance with environmental policies and procedures.
Stakeholder Engagement:
Liaise with local communities, regulatory authorities, and other stakeholders regarding environmental concerns, project impact, and compliance with ESMP.
Sustainability Initiatives:
Contribute to the development and implementation of sustainability strategies and initiatives aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of the company’s operations.
Continuous Improvement:
Monitor and evaluate environmental performance, making recommendations for continuous improvement in line with industry best practices and sustainability goals.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or a related field.
Experience:
Working experience of 5 years and 2 years in the same field or related role.
Minimum of 2 assignments in Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) implementation and monitoring, preferably within the renewable energy or infrastructure sectors.
Practical knowledge of environmental assessment processes and regulations.
Skills and Competencies:
Strong understanding of environmental regulations, policies, and compliance requirements.
Experience with environmental impact assessments (EIA) and sustainability reporting.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Proficient in Microsoft Office and environmental monitoring tools.
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Key Attributes:
A proactive and detail-oriented approach to environmental management.
Ability to balance environmental protection with project goals and timelines.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Passion for sustainability and renewable energy solutions.
