Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited (Lugazi) is part of Mehta Group of Companies and is the leading producer of mill white Sugar in the Country. We are seeking to recruit a suitably qualified person to fill the following positions.
Environmental Compliance: Ensure compliance with environmental regulations, laws, and permits by monitoring and assessing environmental impacts of activities, operations, and projects, and implementing measures to mitigate risks and ensure compliance.
Environmental Assessment: Conduct environmental assessments, surveys, and audits to identify potential environmental risks, hazards, and impacts, and develop strategies to minimize negative effects on ecosystems, habitats, and natural resources.
Waste Management: Develop and implement waste management plans, programs, and procedures to minimize waste generation, promote recycling and reuse, and ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste streams.
Pollution Control: Monitor air, water, and soil quality, and implement pollution control measures and pollution prevention initiatives to minimize emissions, discharges, and contamination from industrial, commercial, and municipal sources.
Environmental Monitoring: Establish and maintain environmental monitoring programs and systems to track environmental indicators, trends, and performance metrics, and analyze data to assess environmental conditions and identify areas for improvement.
Environmental Education and Outreach: Provide environmental education, training, and outreach to employees, stakeholders, and the public to raise awareness about environmental issues, promote sustainable practices, and encourage environmental stewardship.
Environmental Reporting: Prepare and submit environmental reports, permits, and compliance documentation to regulatory agencies, government authorities, and stakeholders, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of reporting.
Natural Resource Management: Support the conservation and sustainable management of natural resources, including biodiversity, water resources, forests, and wildlife habitats, through habitat restoration, conservation planning, and ecosystem management initiatives.
Environmental Policy Development: Participate in the development, review, and implementation of environmental policies, procedures, and guidelines to support organizational objectives, sustainability goals, and environmental best practices.

Education: A bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, ecology, biology, or a related field is typically required for Environment Officer positions. Advanced degrees (e.g., master's or doctoral degree) may be preferred for senior-level roles.
Experience: Previous experience in environmental management, environmental consulting, or regulatory compliance is often required for Environment Officer positions. Entry-level candidates may start with internships or junior positions to gain relevant experience.
Regulatory Knowledge: Strong knowledge of environmental regulations, laws, and standards at the local, state, national, and international levels, including regulations related to air quality, water quality, waste management, and pollution control.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in environmental assessment techniques, monitoring methods, data analysis tools, and environmental modeling software, as well as knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and environmental databases.
Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential for Environment Officers to convey technical information, environmental findings, and regulatory requirements to diverse audiences, including colleagues, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies.
Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are necessary for Environment Officers to analyze complex environmental data, assess environmental risks and impacts, and develop effective solutions and strategies to address environmental challenges.
Project Management: Basic project management skills, including planning, organizing, and prioritizing tasks, managing resources, and meeting deadlines, are important for Environment Officers to oversee environmental projects and initiatives effectively.
Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal skills are necessary for Environment Officers to build relationships, collaborate with colleagues, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies, and work effectively as part of multidisciplinary teams.
