Enrolled Midwives, often working under the supervision of Registered Midwives or Obstetricians, provide essential care to women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period. Their role is crucial in ensuring the health and well-being of both mother and baby.

Antenatal Care:
Conduct routine check-ups to monitor the health of the mother and fetus.
Educate expectant mothers on prenatal care, nutrition, and lifestyle choices.
Perform and interpret routine diagnostic tests, such as urine tests and blood pressure monitoring.
Assist in the management of minor complications and refer complex cases to higher-level professionals.
Labor and Delivery:
Support women during labor and delivery, providing physical and emotional assistance.
Monitor the progress of labor and recognize signs of potential complications.
Assist with natural deliveries, ensuring adherence to safe birthing practices.
Provide initial newborn care, including APGAR scoring and neonatal resuscitation if necessary.
Postnatal Care:
Monitor the health and recovery of the mother post-delivery.
Assist with breastfeeding and educate mothers on newborn care.
Conduct postnatal check-ups and provide guidance on family planning and contraception.
Education and Support:
Offer antenatal and postnatal education classes to groups or individuals.
Provide psychological support and counseling to mothers and families.
Educate women about reproductive health and preventative care.
Documentation and Communication:
Maintain accurate and comprehensive medical records of mothers and babies.
Communicate effectively with other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated care.
Report any significant changes in the patient’s condition to supervising midwives or doctors.
Community and Home Visits:
Conduct home visits as part of antenatal and postnatal care to ensure ongoing support.
Provide community outreach and education programs to promote maternal and infant health.

Education:
Complete a recognized midwifery program, typically a diploma or certificate course.
The curriculum generally includes subjects such as anatomy, physiology, prenatal care, labor and delivery, postnatal care, and newborn care.
Licensing and Certification:
Pass a national or regional licensing examination to practice as an Enrolled Midwife.
Obtain additional certifications if required by the region or employer, such as neonatal resuscitation or breastfeeding support.
Skills:
Strong clinical skills in maternal and newborn care.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to support and educate mothers.
Ability to work independently and as part of a healthcare team.
High level of empathy, patience, and emotional resilience.
Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Experience:
Clinical experience obtained through midwifery education programs.
Some employers may prefer candidates with previous experience in maternal and infant care.
Physical and Emotional Stamina:
Ability to handle the physical demands of the job, including long hours and being on-call.
Emotional resilience to cope with the stresses and challenges of midwifery care.
Continued Education:
Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with advancements in midwifery and maternal health practices.
Some regions require continuing education credits for license renewal.
