Job Description

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

Education: A bachelor's degree in natural resource management, environmental science, forestry, biology, or a related field is typically required. Some positions may require a master's degree for more specialized roles.

Experience: Relevant work experience in natural resource management, conservation, or related fields is often required. This may include internships, fieldwork, or employment with government agencies, non-profit organizations, or consulting firms.

Knowledge: A strong understanding of ecological principles, conservation practices, environmental laws and regulations, and relevant scientific methodologies is essential.

Skills: Proficiency in data collection and analysis, GIS (Geographic Information Systems), communication, problem-solving, and teamwork are important skills for natural resources officers.

Certifications: Depending on the jurisdiction and specific duties of the position, certifications such as wildland firefighter certification, pesticide applicator license, or law enforcement certification may be required or beneficial.

Physical Fitness: The ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and rugged terrain, as well as the capacity to lift equipment and perform fieldwork, is often necessary.

Interpersonal Skills: Effective communication and interpersonal skills are important for interacting with colleagues, stakeholders, and the public, as well as for conducting outreach and education activities.

Licensing: In some jurisdictions, natural resources officers may be required to obtain a specific license or certification to perform law enforcement duties related to resource protection and regulation enforcement.
