Job Description
As a Data Scientist in the Trade Unit (ETIRI), you will contribute to the World Bank’s efforts to enhance trade policy programs using cutting-edge data science approaches. You will support the development and maintenance of large datasets, help implement big data pipelines, assist in creating reproducible research packages, and engage with client countries to inform policy through data-driven insights. The role also involves contributing to knowledge products, supporting trade analytics, engaging in global and country-level dialogue, and representing the team in conferences and learning events.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Contribute to analytical studies using big data (e.g., Logistics Performance Index).
Maintain and update large datasets, in collaboration with external providers.
Build and manage big data pipelines for various data formats and scales.
Support trade team members with reproducibility packages and collaboration with research teams.
Develop toolkits for analytical work using machine learning and big data.
Participate in country-level analytics, client policy dialogues, and lending projects.
Prepare briefs, presentations, policy notes, and review key documents.
Organize and contribute to dissemination activities, workshops, and learning programs.
Engage in internal knowledge sharing (Data Science & Statistics Community).
Foster partnerships with other units and external organizations on big data analytics.
Assist the Practice Manager in quality control and corporate deliverables.
Represent the team at internal and external knowledge exchange events.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Master’s or advanced degree in Data Science, Economics, Trade, or related fields (PhD preferred).
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience (or 2 years with a PhD) in data science and trade analytics.
Strong analytical, organizational, and independent research skills.
Proficiency in Python (NumPy, Pandas, scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
Experience with big data tools (Databricks, PySpark).
Familiarity with GIS, SQL, and data management tools (e.g., GitHub).
Hands-on experience with machine learning (supervised/unsupervised learning, neural networks).
Solid understanding of the data lifecycle, reproducibility, and data protection.
Excellent communication skills, including data visualization and leadership under pressure.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines in a team setting.
