Job Description

 Position: Communications Associate

Role Overview

The Communications Associate will play a key role in implementing Ahaki’s communications and visibility strategies. Under the supervision of the Communications Officer/Specialist, the Associate will support content development, digital engagement, branding consistency, and stakeholder outreach—helping amplify Ahaki’s voice across platforms and audiences.

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

1. Content Development & Editorial Support

  • Draft, edit, and proofread newsletters, blog posts, reports, factsheets, and digital content.

  • Assist in repackaging research and advocacy materials for different stakeholders.

  • Maintain editorial calendars aligned with program and strategic goals.

2. Digital & Social Media Management

  • Schedule and manage content across Ahaki’s social media channels.

  • Monitor engagement metrics and suggest improvements.

  • Promote events, publications, and announcements in real-time.

3. Graphic Design & Visual Content

  • Create basic visuals, infographics, and promotional materials using tools like Canva, PowerPoint, or Adobe Suite.

  • Ensure consistency with Ahaki’s brand and style guidelines.

4. Event & Campaign Communications

  • Assist in communication planning and execution for events and campaigns.

  • Support live event coverage, photography, and post-event content.

5. Media Monitoring & Contact Management

  • Track media coverage and maintain a media clipping archive.

  • Update media contact lists, stakeholder databases, and mailing lists.

6. Internal Communication & Documentation

  • Support dissemination of internal communications via intranet, bulletins, etc.

  • Take meeting notes and contribute to documentation of success stories and lessons learned.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Development Studies, or related fields.

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a communications role, ideally in academia, public health, or the development sector.

Core Skills:

  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading abilities.

  • Ability to simplify complex or technical content for broad audiences.

  • Skilled in photography, video editing, and operating audiovisual equipment.

  • Familiarity with social media tools, email marketing platforms, and web content management systems.

  • Proficient in Canva, Adobe Suite, or similar design software.

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.

  • Comfortable working in fast-paced, collaborative environments.

Additional Attributes:

  • Professional fluency in English; knowledge of African languages is a plus.

  • Strong interpersonal and team collaboration skills.

  • Passion for health equity, social justice, and Africentric development narratives.

  • Alignment with Ahaki’s mission and values.
