Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Business Development: Implementing strategies to attract and retain businesses within the city, including facilitating partnerships with local organizations, chambers of commerce, and economic development agencies.

  • Permitting and Licensing: Overseeing the process for issuing business licenses, permits, and approvals, ensuring compliance with local regulations, zoning ordinances, and health and safety standards.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Monitoring and enforcing compliance with commercial regulations, including signage ordinances, land use restrictions, environmental regulations, and business tax requirements.

  • Small Business Support: Providing assistance and resources to small businesses and entrepreneurs, including guidance on business planning, financing options, and navigating regulatory requirements.

  • Commercial Real Estate: Collaborating with real estate developers, property owners, and brokers to facilitate commercial property transactions, redevelopment projects, and revitalization efforts.

  • Retail Development: Working with retail businesses to support their growth and expansion, conducting market analysis, identifying potential locations, and offering incentives or assistance to attract new retailers.

  • Business Retention: Developing programs and initiatives to support the retention and expansion of existing businesses, including workforce development, infrastructure improvements, and access to capital.

  • Data Analysis: Collecting and analyzing data on local economic trends, commercial vacancy rates, consumer spending patterns, and other indicators to inform decision-making and strategic planning.

  • Interagency Coordination: Collaborating with other city departments, agencies, and stakeholders involved in economic development, planning, zoning, transportation, and public works to align commercial initiatives with broader city goals and objectives.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Education: A bachelor's degree in business administration, economics, urban planning, public administration, or a related field is typically required. A master's degree or professional certification in economic development may be preferred.

  • Experience: Several years of experience in economic development, commercial real estate, business management, or a related field, with demonstrated knowledge of commercial regulations, market analysis, and business retention strategies.

  • Networking Skills: Strong networking and relationship-building skills are essential for establishing partnerships with business owners, developers, community organizations, and government agencies to support commercial growth and development.

  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations governing commercial activities, including zoning laws, permitting processes, environmental regulations, and tax policies.

  • Analytical Skills: Proficiency in data analysis, market research, and financial modeling to assess the feasibility of commercial projects, identify market opportunities, and evaluate the impact of economic development initiatives.
