Job Description

The Cashier role is customer-focused, requiring the incumbent to deliver a world-class shopping experience while ensuring the accurate processing of transactions. The position involves adherence to company policies, maintaining proper cash handling procedures, and supporting the store team in achieving customer satisfaction goals. Responsibilities include transaction processing, handling refunds and exchanges, assisting customers with loyalty card programs, ensuring cash security, and reporting customer complaints or compliments. The role also requires strong attention to detail, accountability, and compliance with Dis-Chem’s operational standards and security procedures.

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

  • Process customer transactions on the Dis-Chem operating system.

  • Adhere to Dis-Chem’s customer service policies and procedures.

  • Establish professional relationships with customers.

  • Report customer complaints and compliments to supervisors or management.

  • Stay informed of current sales and promotions.

  • Ensure accurate cash flow management.

  • Process payments (cash, cards, vouchers, coupons, etc.) and loyalty card programs.

  • Handle refunds and merchandise exchanges where authorized.

  • Maintain till security and confidentiality of daily takings.

  • Adhere to safety, security, and risk management procedures.

  • Recognize and report suspicious behavior to management.

  • Support compliance with Dis-Chem’s communication and 5-star customer service principles.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 / Matric.

  • Minimum of 6 months’ cashier/till operations experience.

  • Computer literacy (MS Office).

  • Sound numerical skills.

  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken).

  • Basic customer service skills.

  • Willingness to work retail hours.

Competencies (Essential):

  • Knowledge of operating cash registers and cash handling.

  • Accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Strong communication skills.

  • Presentable, trustworthy, and honest.

  • Problem-solving ability.

  • Social awareness and emotional intelligence.

  • Accountability and time management.

Advantageous:

  • Ability to speak a third additional language.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Willingness to work retail hours.

  • Must have reliable transport and/or reside near the store.

  • South African citizen.

  • Clear credit and criminal record.
