Farm Africa

Job Description

Reports to: Project Manager, REGAIN Project

Purpose of the Role:
Farm Africa has secured a three-year AGRA-funded project, implemented in Eastern Uganda in consortium with Equator Seeds, the Grain Council of Uganda (TGCU), and Stanbic Bank. The project focuses on “Enhancing resilient food systems for 76,400 smallholder farmer households through climate-adaptive and inclusive food loss reduction solutions in Eastern Uganda.”

The Business Advisor (BA) will lead farmer mobilization, capacity building, and strengthening of commercial relationships among smallholder farmers, Village-Based Advisors, agro-dealers, suppliers, and other market actors in Eastern Uganda to increase adoption and supply of affordable Food Loss Reduction Solutions (FLRS).

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

Project Planning: Play a key role in activity planning and sequencing to ensure maximum impact by:

  • Supporting the Project Manager to develop a detailed implementation plan and budget in line with REGAIN requirements, milestones, and contractual programme plans.

  • Supporting the management of monthly, quarterly, and annual work plans for project activities and logistics, identifying and responding to interdependencies across sub-project workstreams.

  • Regularly reviewing delivery progress against plans, highlighting areas of concern in a timely manner, and proactively addressing them.

Project Technical Delivery: Deliver project activities to a high standard and in line with Farm Africa and donor guidelines by:

  • Leading farmer mobilization and digital profiling of 76,400 smallholder farmer households.

  • Training and equipping 382 Village-Based Advisors (VBAs) and District Agricultural Officers to roll out climate-resilient Food Loss Reduction Solutions (FLRS).

  • In collaboration with Equator Seeds, supporting the establishment of 382 on-farm demonstrations on climate-smart Post-Harvest Handling (PHH) and FLRS technologies.

  • Training smallholder farmers on climate-resilient FLRS.

  • Conducting a scoping study to profile suppliers and assess youth- and women-led groups.

  • Training agro-dealers and processors on complementary services related to FLRS.

  • Scaling digital demand aggregation and payment platforms with technology partners.

  • Promoting uptake of FLRS technologies by 76,400 smallholder farmer households.

  • Supporting the formation and strengthening of 1,530 Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) to promote adoption of FLRS.

  • In collaboration with Stanbic Bank, digitizing 1,530 VSLAs and 50 SACCOs to enable access to microloans for FLRS investment.

  • In collaboration with Stanbic Bank, training 382 VBAs in financial literacy and linking them to banking services.

  • In collaboration with Stanbic Bank, facilitating linkages between 1,530 VSLAs, 50 SACCOs, and affordable, diversified financial services (e.g., FlexiPay).

Financial Management: Deliver assigned activities in accordance with financial guidelines and within approved budgets by:

  • Supporting the Project Manager to regularly forecast budgets and adjust for changes in implementation plans and financial context (e.g., inflation, exchange rate fluctuations).

  • Supporting review of budget monitoring reports and providing timely explanations and corrective actions for significant variances.

  • Supporting the Project Manager and Finance & Administration Manager to monitor financial risks and develop mitigation measures.

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning: Support monitoring and evaluation of project outputs, outcomes, and impact by:

  • Contributing to the development and implementation of the Monitoring and Learning Plan (MLP) in line with Farm Africa and donor requirements.

  • Supporting mid-term, annual, final, and other external evaluations, and ensuring learning and recommendations are integrated into future implementation.

  • Contributing to internal and external reporting, and annual and semi-annual project performance reviews and workshops.

  • Documenting and sharing case studies, success stories, best practices, and key lessons learned.

  • Reviewing critical lessons to identify success factors for scaling programme effectiveness.

  • Participating in quarterly Joint Results Review Committee (JRRC) meetings and annual project performance reviews.

Organizational Contribution:

  • Play an active role as a member of the Farm Africa Country Team.

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of Farm Africa’s strategy.

  • Identify and explore opportunities to grow and expand the country project pipeline, including current and new project opportunities.

  • Work with the MELC, Country Representative, and Programme Funding Unit to prepare funding proposals when requested, ensuring lessons learned are incorporated into future project design.

  • Participate in country-level or pan–Farm Africa programme meetings with other project coordinators, as reasonably requested.

These essential functions are not intended to be an exhaustive list of duties. Employees may be required to perform other job-related tasks as assigned. All responsibilities are subject to established performance goals and targets
