About the Organisation
World Vision began working in Rwanda in 1994 to respond to the unprecedented chaos caused by the genocide. For the first six years, the key focus of our interventions was relief and rehabilitation for the close to 3 million people that were displaced after this tragedy.
In the year 2000, we began long-term, child-focused area development programmes in different parts of the country, targeting vulnerable children and their families with interventions in the areas of education and child sponsorship; health and nutrition; water, sanitation and hygiene; and economic empowerment of households.
Today, our more than 300 staff in Rwanda work in 24 out of 30 Districts, supporting more than 1.2 million people –especially children– through 27 area development programmes spread across the “land of a thousand hills”.
VisionFund Rwanda (VFR) is one of Rwanda’s largest deposit-taking microfinance institutions, committed to empowering underprivileged communities through access to financial services. Established in 1997 as a World Vision microfinance program and licensed by the National Bank of Rwanda in 2004, VFR operates under VisionFund International, a global microfinance network active in 28 countries.
VFR’s mission is to provide affordable savings and loan products that promote financial inclusion and improve the livelihoods of low-income entrepreneurs—especially women, youth, and rural communities. The institution works closely with partners such as World Vision Rwanda and Care International, using digital financial solutions and community-driven models to reach clients even in remote areas.
