Job Description
They provide assistance, directions, and information to customers, visitors, or employees, acting as a point of contact for inquiries, concerns, or requests while maintaining a professional and courteous demeanor
Duties and Responsibilities
Surveillance: Security guards monitor premises and surroundings through patrols, surveillance cameras, and alarm systems to detect and prevent security breaches, unauthorized access, or suspicious activities.
Access Control: They control access to restricted areas by verifying credentials, issuing visitor passes, and monitoring entry and exit points to ensure only authorized personnel or visitors enter the premises.
Emergency Response: Security guards respond to emergencies such as fires, medical incidents, accidents, or security threats by alerting appropriate authorities, evacuating occupants, and providing assistance until emergency services arrive.
Conflict Resolution: They intervene in conflicts, disturbances, or altercations among individuals within the premises, defusing tensions, enforcing rules, and maintaining order to prevent escalation and ensure the safety of occupants.
Asset Protection: Security guards safeguard valuable assets, equipment, merchandise, or sensitive information by implementing security measures such as asset tagging, inventory checks, and theft prevention strategies.
Customer Service: They provide assistance, directions, and information to customers, visitors, or employees, acting as a point of contact for inquiries, concerns, or requests while maintaining a professional and courteous demeanor.
Patrols and Inspections: Conducting regular patrols, inspections, and security checks of the premises to identify security risks, hazards, or vulnerabilities, and taking appropriate corrective actions to mitigate potential threats.
Report Writing: Security guards document incidents, observations, and security-related activities in written reports, logs, or incident forms, providing accurate and detailed accounts for record-keeping and future reference.
Alarm Response: They respond to security alarms, alerts, or distress calls promptly, investigating the cause of alarms, assessing the situation, and taking necessary actions to address security breaches or potential threats.
Collaboration: Security guards collaborate with law enforcement agencies, emergency responders, property management, or security personnel from neighboring establishments to coordinate security efforts, share information, and respond effectively to security incidents.
Qualifications and Competencies
Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is typically required for entry-level security guard positions. Some employers may prefer candidates with additional education, such as vocational training in security or law enforcement.
Licensing and Certification: Security guards are often required to obtain a valid security guard license or certification from state or local regulatory authorities. Requirements vary by jurisdiction but may include completing training courses, background checks, and passing licensing exams.
