Job Description

Use surveillance equipment such as CCTV cameras, monitors, and alarm systems to monitor for suspicious behavior, security breaches, or safety hazards, and report any incidents or concerns to supervisors or authorities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Security Patrols: Conduct regular patrols of the premises, including outdoor areas, parking lots, and building perimeters, to deter trespassing, theft, vandalism, and other unauthorized activities.

  • Access Control: Monitor entrances, gates, and checkpoints to control access to the premises, verify the identity of visitors, and ensure that only authorized individuals are allowed entry.

  • Surveillance: Use surveillance equipment such as CCTV cameras, monitors, and alarm systems to monitor for suspicious behavior, security breaches, or safety hazards, and report any incidents or concerns to supervisors or authorities.

  • Emergency Response: Respond promptly to emergencies, alarms, disturbances, or incidents such as fires, medical emergencies, or security breaches, taking appropriate action to protect lives and property and notify emergency services if necessary.

  • Crowd Control: Maintain order and control crowds during events, gatherings, or busy periods, ensuring that attendees adhere to safety regulations, follow instructions, and behave appropriately.

  • Report Writing: Document security-related incidents, observations, and activities in written reports or logbooks, providing detailed and accurate information for record-keeping, analysis, and follow-up by management or law enforcement.

  • Customer Service: Provide assistance, directions, and information to employees, visitors, and customers, demonstrating professionalism, courtesy, and helpfulness in interactions to enhance the overall experience and perception of security services.

  • Security Equipment Maintenance: Inspect, test, and maintain security equipment, alarms, locks, and other safety devices to ensure they are in good working condition and can effectively perform their intended functions.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is typically the minimum educational requirement for entry-level askari positions. Some employers may prefer candidates with additional training in security, law enforcement, or related fields.

  • Security Training: Completion of basic security training courses or certification programs may be required, covering topics such as access control, patrol procedures, emergency response, crisis management, and legal rights and responsibilities.

  • Physical Fitness: Good physical condition and stamina are important for askaris, as the job may require standing, walking, or patrolling for long periods, as well as responding quickly to emergencies or physical threats.

  • Communication Skills: Effective verbal and written communication skills are essential for askaris to communicate with coworkers, supervisors, visitors, and emergency responders, as well as to accurately report incidents or observations.

  • Observational Skills: Strong observational skills are needed to detect unusual behavior, security risks, or safety hazards, and to take appropriate action to address or mitigate potential threats.

  • Problem-Solving Ability: Askaris should be able to think quickly and make sound decisions under pressure, especially in emergency situations or when faced with challenging or potentially dangerous circumstances.

  • Integrity and Trustworthiness: Askaris are entrusted with the security and safety of people and property, so they must demonstrate honesty, reliability, and ethical conduct in carrying out their duties and responsibilities.

  • Legal Knowledge: Familiarity with relevant laws, regulations, and procedures related to security, privacy, and use of force may be required, especially when dealing with situations involving detainment, arrest, or use of physical force.
