About the Organisation
Bugema University is a private, co-educational institution of higher learning located in Kalagala, Luweero District, Uganda, approximately 33 kilometers northeast of Kampala. Established in 1948 as the Bugema Missionary Training School to train teachers and pastors for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in East Africa, it evolved into Bugema Missionary College and later Bugema Adventist College.
In 1994, it attained university status, and in 1997, it was licensed by the Uganda Ministry of Education and Sports to operate as a university. Affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Bugema University is part of the global Seventh-day Adventist education system, the world's second-largest Christian school system.
The university offers a diverse range of academic programs across various disciplines, including Business Administration, Education, Theology and Religious Studies, Science and Technology, Agriculture and Applied Sciences, Health and Allied Sciences, and Social Sciences.
It provides undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs, some in collaboration with international institutions like the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton (Kenya), and Central Luzon State University (Philippines). Job Description
The Technician will assist academic staff and students by maintaining laboratory equipment, preparing teaching materials, and ensuring safety during practical sessions. The role also includes supporting research activities and contributing to an efficient and safe laboratory environment. The position is offered on a three-year renewable contract based on satisfactory performance.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Prepare materials, tools, and setups for laboratory experiments.
Ensure all laboratory equipment is properly maintained and functional.
Assist lecturers and students during practical and experimental sessions.
Monitor laboratory usage and enforce safety protocols.
Maintain records of inventory, equipment usage, and repairs.
Support departmental research projects and technology demonstrations.
Report damages, needs for replacement, or upgrades to the Head of Department.
Stay updated on best practices in lab safety and emerging technologies.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
First Class or Second Class Upper Division Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant technical field (e.g., Lab Science and Technology – Physics).
Candidates with a Second Class Lower Division Degree may be considered under special circumstances.
At least an Ordinary Diploma (Credit and above) in a relevant discipline.
Minimum of three (3) years of working experience as an Assistant Technician or in an equivalent role.
Strong understanding of laboratory safety protocols and equipment handling.
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively and independently with minimal supervision.
