Job Description
Position: Shop Assistant
Location: Uganda (Assigned Shop)
Department: Sales
Reports to: Shop Supervisor
Job Grade: General Worker (GW)
Job Summary
The Shop Assistant plays a key role in the daily operations of the shop, including stock handling, weighing, icing, order preparation, and ensuring excellent customer service. The role supports shop performance by contributing to sales targets while upholding strict standards of hygiene, safety, and product quality.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Actively contribute to achieving monthly sales targets by participating in sales growth initiatives.
Deliver excellent customer service by maintaining shop appearance, ensuring proper product display, and assisting customers.
Handle customer complaints professionally, ensuring issues are resolved or escalated appropriately.
Receive and organize stock supplies, ensuring fridges are well-stocked and inventory is accurately maintained.
Conduct quality assurance checks and enforce proper handling, storage, and icing of fish according to Yalelo's standards.
Be knowledgeable about all fish products and promotions, and confidently share this information with customers.
Accurately take and prepare customer orders, process transactions using the POS system, and maintain cash handling procedures.
Support the Shop Supervisor with cash register operations, stock reconciliations, and daily reporting.
Maintain high hygiene standards for all work areas and equipment, in line with food safety and cleanliness guidelines.
Follow health and safety regulations, promptly reporting any incidents or hazards.
Conduct regular equipment inspections (e.g., fridges, POS systems, weighing scales) to ensure proper functionality.
Comply with internal Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and workstream policies.
Participate in ongoing training sessions to enhance product knowledge and service skills.
Perform any additional duties assigned by the Shop Supervisor to support shop efficiency.
Key Deliverables
Achievement of monthly sales targets.
Maintenance of stock loss within the acceptable limit (0.5%).
High levels of customer satisfaction and minimal complaints.
Adherence to safety, hygiene, and quality standards.
Zero major or fatal safety incidents.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Minimum Diploma in Business Administration or a related field.
Credit in Mathematics at UCE and a Principal Pass in Economics or Entrepreneurship at UACE.
At least 2 years of experience in fish processing, handling, or a similar role is an added advantage.
Skills & Competencies
Excellent customer service and communication skills.
Proficiency in English and local languages.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Willingness to work long hours and in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to follow instructions, work under pressure, and adapt to new processes.
Knowledge of safety procedures and hygiene standards.
Physically fit and able to handle manual tasks such as standing for extended periods and lifting weights.
Positive work attitude and ability to work well in a multicultural team.
Working Conditions
This role involves physical activity, including lifting and standing for extended periods. The working environment may include exposure to cold conditions and fish odour. Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and compliance with all workflow safety procedures is required.
