Senior Protection and Communication Engineer

Supervises: Protection and Communication Engineer
No of Supervisees: 4 staff
Department: Engineering
Duty Station: Duty Area
Job Purpose
To ensure safety for network plant / equipment and lives on occurrence of power system faults / abnormalities and on operation of apparatus; by designing and supervising the implementation and maintenance of effective protection schemes, local / remote apparatus controls and voltage regulation systems on the network.
Impact: The Protection and Communication Engineer designs and supervises the installation of the safety of the equipment to ensure the lives of the teams in the organization are protected. The Engineer also ensures that the maintenance of the protection schemes is up to date.

How to Apply
Key Result Areas
Design new schemes or modifications to existing protection, control and voltage regulation schemes.
Responsible for Scheme implementation, commissioning and evaluation
Operate and Maintain protection schemes
Responsible for the effective management and implementation of the performance management system
Perform all administrative related duties pertaining to standards, works orders and legal requirements
Specify and evaluate the Procurement of special tools and equipment required for network protection practice and ensure effective maintenance of these tools
Responsible for Health, Safety and Environment Management
Provides information that is crucial to other sections’ processes e.g. Planning, primary plant, Projects, systems control, and the distribution team
Receives information from other sections useful in making effective protection designs.
Expected Output
Design the Protection, Control and Voltage regulation schemes
Periodic maintenance of protection, control and voltage regulation equipment according to equipment manuals
Supervise the repair of the protection, control and voltage regulation equipment
Ensure the Health, Safety and Environment procedures are designed and adhered to
Records of activities pertaining to standards, works orders and legal requirements.

Person Specifications
Minimum Academic Qualifications
Bachelor of Electrical Engineering or Bachelor of Power Systems Engineering.
Post qualifications and certification in protection of electrical systems is desired, but not required.
Member of UIPE, ERB
Experience
Minimum of 5 years of experience in power system protection for at least MV distribution networks.
Competencies
In depth knowledge and understanding of Power system protection technology, with technical skills.
Accredited to intermediate level on protection equipment.
Innovative thinking skills.
Curiosity / Information Seeking
Valid driver license.
Ability to integrate effectively with other specialist disciplines.
