Job Title:  Radiation Protection Officer – Instrumentation

Job Summary: To provide technical support and expertise in the calibration, maintenance, testing and verification of radiation detection and measurement instruments to ensure reliability and accuracy of radiation monitoring systems used in regulatory activities.

  • Coordinate the Installation of new equipment.

  • Assist in carrying out performance checks, testing and calibration of radiation measuring equipment and systems.

  • Undertake controlled experiments and trials.

  • Assist in refurbishing electronic gadgets for applications in nuclear instrumentation.

  • Develop Regulatory Documents as may be required.

  • Update instrumentation databases.

  • Diagnose and repair faults in radiation monitoring instruments.

  • Provide technical instrumentation support during inspections.

  • Assist inspectors in instrument set up, measurement, recording and data interpretation.

  • Participate in environmental radiation monitoring programs.

  • Participate in preparation of instrumentation reports.

  • Participate in emergency response activities during radiological events.

  • Maintain an updated inventory of radiation instruments.

  • Assist in Analysis and interpretation of radiation monitoring data for decision making and reporting.

  • Participate in the coordination of procurement of new equipment by preparing technical specifications.

  • Maintain a calibration schedule, service logs and certificates for all regulatory instruments.

  • Develop and update Standard Operating Procedures (SoPs) for calibration and maintenance activities.

  • Participate in the implementation of a Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) program for radiation instrumentation.

  • Train regulatory inspectors, licensees and other users on the correct operation and maintenance of radiation detection instruments.

  • Participate in the development of guidelines and standards for radiation measurements and calibration services.

  • Participate in training programs and workshops on instrumentation.

  • Provide technical advice during procurement, installation and acceptance testing of radiation detection systems for regulatory purposes.

  • Participate in the preparation of quarterly and annual departmental reports on regulatory instrumentation activities.

  • Participate in internal audits and management reviews.

  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs of radiation instruments to ensure reliability and continuity of operations.

  • Participate in inter-laboratory comparisons and proficiency testing to validate measurement accuracy.

  • Carry out Research.

  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

  • At least a Second Class Bachelor’s degree in either Physics or Radiation protection or Instrumentation engineering or Electronics or Nuclear science and technology or Science Laboratory Technology (Physics) from a recognized and reputable University.

  • A Masters’ degree or Post Graduate qualification in either Physics or Radiation protection or Instrumentation engineering or Electronics or Nuclear science and technology or Science Laboratory Technology (Physics) is an added advantage.

  • Experience in Nuclear science and technology is an added advantage

Key Competencies and Skills

  • Strong understanding of radiation and nuclear safety concepts and measurement techniques.

  • Proficiency in calibration, trouble shooting and maintenance of radiation measuring instruments

  • Proficiency in ICT tools for data recording, analysis and reporting

  • Sound knowledge of IAEA and ISO standards on radiation instrumentation and quality systems

  • High level of technical precision, analytical skills and attention to detail.

  • Report writing, presentation and communications skills

  • Knowledge of strategic management

  • Ability to make decisions

  • Demonstration of personal drive

  • Strong conceptual and analytical skills

  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision

  • Familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025 Calibration Standards and Laboratory Management Systems

  • Sound knowledge of the Atomic Energy Act Cap. 154, Regulations thereunder and IAEA Safety Standards.

  • Age: 21-30 years
