DEPARTMENT: Operations

JOB TITLE: Medical Officer - Retainer (1 Vacancy)

REPORTS TO: Health & Safety Manager

JOB PURPOSE: Provide routine medical and clinical guidance to UNOC staff on various health matters and make appropriate recommendations for medical referrals in case of non-routine health issues.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Conduct health and fitness assessments for staff, providing reports and recommendations on their overall health and wellness status.

  • Offer medical advisory services to UNOC staff upon consultation.

  • Provide support in managing epidemics and emergency health incidents arising from major calamities or other staff medical emergencies.

  • Oversee the referral process for staff medical cases, ensuring timely and proper care.

  • Manage care for staff requiring chronic care and ensure appropriate follow-up.

  • Implement illness prevention programs, including health education, immunization, and counseling for staff.

  • Review and analyze medical reports from health insurance providers, advising Management on staff health and offering recommendations for improvement.

  • Participate in inspecting medical facilities where UNOC staff receive treatment, making recommendations as necessary.

  • Coordinate effective rescue operations for staff in emergency situations, liaising with ambulance services and hospitals/clinics to ensure life-saving interventions.

  • Review staff medical claims and recommend reimbursement decisions.

  • Assess staff or stations with critical health issues, making recommendations to Management.

  • Develop and distribute periodic Health Education Articles to raise awareness of emerging health issues affecting staff.

  • Assist UNOC HR on health-related issues within the HRMM concerning staff health.

  • Ensure accurate and consistent medical record-keeping practices.

  • Oversee UNOC’s on-site clinic(s), ensuring proper functioning and delivery of services.

  • Provide technical guidance to Management on any other health-related concerns affecting staff.

  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor(s).

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • A Master's degree in Medicine (MMed).

  • A valid practicing certificate.

  • Training in Occupational and Public Health.

  • A minimum of five (5) years of proven specialist/consultant experience in medical practice as a physician.

  • At least three (3) years of experience providing similar services to recognized institutions in Uganda (three reference letters required).

  • Experience in public health initiatives such as health education, immunization, counseling programs, HIV/AIDS care, family planning, and non-communicable disease prevention.

  • Clinical risk management experience.

  • Advanced knowledge of medical research methodology and ethics.

  • Extensive knowledge of medical record-keeping practices.
