Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is a Government Agency responsible for Standardization, Quality Assurance, Metrology, and Laboratory Testing (SQMT) with the objectives of promoting Fair Trade and Protecting Consumers and the Environment against Harmful Commodities.

Legal Advice: Provide legal advice and guidance to the organization, its management, and employees on various legal matters, including contracts, regulatory compliance, labor law, intellectual property, and corporate governance.
Contract Review and Drafting: Review, draft, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and other legal documents to ensure they meet the organization's objectives and comply with applicable laws and regulations.
Compliance Monitoring: Monitor regulatory changes and developments in relevant areas of law to ensure the organization remains compliant with applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards.
Risk Management: Identify legal risks and liabilities facing the organization and develop strategies to mitigate and manage those risks effectively.
Dispute Resolution: Handle legal disputes, litigation, and claims involving the organization, including representing the organization in negotiations, mediation, arbitration, and court proceedings when necessary.
Policy Development: Assist in the development, review, and implementation of organizational policies and procedures to ensure they are legally sound and aligned with the organization's goals and values.
Corporate Governance: Provide support and advice on corporate governance matters, including board governance, directors' duties, and compliance with corporate governance principles and best practices.
Training and Education: Develop and deliver legal training programs and materials for employees to increase awareness and understanding of legal issues relevant to their roles and responsibilities.
Legal Research: Conduct legal research on specific issues, case law, statutes, and regulations to support decision-making and ensure the organization's legal positions are well-founded.
Contract Management: Maintain and organize contracts and legal documents, including establishing contract management processes and systems to track contract status, renewals, and obligations.
Education: A bachelor's degree in law (LLB) is typically required to become a Legal Officer. Some positions may prefer candidates with a master's degree in law (LLM) or specialization in a specific area of law.
Legal Qualification: Must be admitted to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction. Depending on the jurisdiction and the nature of the role, additional legal qualifications or certifications may be required.
Experience: Several years of relevant legal experience, preferably in a corporate legal department, law firm, or government agency. Experience in contract review, drafting, and negotiation is often essential.
Knowledge of Laws and Regulations: In-depth knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and legal principles applicable to the organization's industry and operations. Specialized knowledge in areas such as employment law, commercial law, intellectual property law, or regulatory compliance may be beneficial.
Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex legal issues, identify key legal risks, and develop practical solutions.
Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly and effectively to non-legal stakeholders.
Attention to Detail: Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in reviewing and drafting legal documents, contracts, and correspondence.
Negotiation Skills: Strong negotiation and persuasion skills, with the ability to negotiate favorable terms and resolve disputes effectively.
Ethical Standards: High ethical standards and integrity, with a commitment to upholding professional ethics and confidentiality in all legal matters.
Teamwork and Collaboration: Ability to work collaboratively with internal stakeholders, external legal counsel, regulatory authorities, and other parties to achieve organizational objectives and resolve legal issues effectively.
