Reporting to the Manager Legal, the Legal Officer provides operational legal support across the Bank's banking businesses by assisting in contract drafting, reviewing security documentation, litigation support, regulatory compliance and legal research.

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

Review security documentation such as letters of offer and valuation reports before issuing instructions
Advise the credit analysis team on proper security structures and recommend amendments to security documents
Escalate gaps and legal risks arising from security perfection to credit management
Conduct legal research and prepare advisory notes and interpret laws, regulations and internal policies
Monitor and communicate regulatory circulars, legal updates and legislative changes to stakeholders
Offer targeted training to branches and support functions on legal processes and compliance
Maintain an updated Professional Indemnity Record and ensure service level agreements with lawyers are up to date
Monitor the quality of advocates' work and compile external counsel reports for review by external auditors
Ensure contracts adhere to approved templates, legal standards and regulatory requirements and identify legal risks within contracts

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

Qualifications & Experience:

Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from a recognized university
Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Advocates Training Programme
Advocate of the High Court of Kenya or equivalent jurisdiction
Member in good standing of the Law Society of Kenya or equivalent
Minimum 2 to 4 years' post-qualification legal experience
Experience within a bank, financial institution or regulated environment is an advantage
Certification in compliance or data protection is an added advantage
