The Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda (CCFU) in partnership with the Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) and with the support of the European Union (EU) and SOGEA/SATOM is setting up a national railway museum in Jinja. For many years, Uganda’s railways, just like other elements of our built heritage, have been under threat. They have been unused or underused, with historical artefacts (such as equipment, engines and carriages) and buildings (such as stations and workers’ cottages) falling into disrepair. Loss of historic sites and artefacts means a lost connection with our shared past. Yet Uganda’s railways played a pivotal role in the economic, colonial and post-colonial development of the country. The railways brought communities together, allowing access to education and other facilities, and cementing national consciousness. CCFU and URC wish to recognise and celebrate the story of Uganda’s historical railway lines; to explore the role the railway has played in the lives of Ugandan people who lived and worked along the line, its role in Uganda’s economic development. Our aim is also to promote the importance of conserving the historical properties and artefacts along the line as a source of common heritage.
