Job Description
Job Title: ECS Engineer (Electrical Control Systems) – Electrical
Project: East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP)
Location: Uganda (Site-Based)
Contract Duration: 18 Months
Start Date: October 2025 or according to site work schedule
Project Overview
The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) is a strategic infrastructure project that will transport crude oil from Uganda’s oil fields to the Tanzanian coast. The project’s success depends on the reliable and secure operation of its electrical infrastructure.
Schneider Electric’s Role
As the Electrical, Instrumentation, and Telecommunications Systems (EITS) integrator, Schneider Electric is responsible for the design, installation, commissioning, and testing of the electrical systems necessary for the pipeline’s safe and efficient operation. This includes automation, control, and power distribution across all sites.
Position Summary
The ECS Engineer (Electrical Control Systems) is responsible for implementing, testing, and commissioning Schneider Electric’s control systems at substations and facilities across the EACOP project. This includes programming and deploying PLC logic, configuring interlocking sequences, interfacing with SCADA systems, and ensuring all ECS components operate in line with project specifications and Schneider Electric standards.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Install, test, and commission ECS components across substations, RTUs, and remote control panels.
Implement control logic for protection schemes, feeder interlocks, and transformer operations.
Interface ECS with SCADA and automation platforms using standard communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, IEC 61850).
Validate wiring, terminal blocks, interposing relays, and signal feedback circuits.
Conduct functional and I/O testing for ECS panels and verify system response accuracy.
Coordinate closely with protection, SCADA, and commissioning teams for end-to-end system validation.
Ensure all ECS configurations align with single-line diagrams, logic diagrams, and control philosophies.
Maintain redline drawings during commissioning and deliver accurate as-built control schematics and documentation.
Troubleshoot ECS faults and resolve issues during energization and handover.
Ensure compliance with Schneider Electric’s quality assurance, safety protocols, and technical documentation standards.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Control, or Automation Engineering.
Experience:
4–6 years of experience in control system integration and commissioning, preferably within energy, utilities, or oil & gas EPC projects.
Industry & Technical Exposure
Strong understanding of substation automation and electrical control systems in utility or industrial environments.
Experience with PLC programming and field-based control system testing.
Familiarity with remote I/O systems, panel wiring verification, and functional testing tools.
Proficient in interpreting electrical schematics, control logic, and wiring schedules.
Working knowledge of industry protocols (e.g., Modbus, IEC 61850, hardwired signals).
Technical Tools & Software
PLC programming platforms
Electrical testing and wiring verification tools
Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and documentation
Personal Attributes
Detail-oriented and hands-on in field environments
Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting capabilities
Effective communicator with solid documentation and reporting habits
Proactive team player with excellent coordination skills
Committed to safety, quality, and timely execution
Preferred Additional Qualifications
Experience with Schneider Electric ECS platforms or remote terminal units (RTUs)
Prior involvement in large-scale oil & gas or energy infrastructure projects
Fluency in English required; knowledge of Swahili or French is an advantage
Performance Metrics (KPIs)
On-time commissioning rate of ECS panels
ECS logic test pass rate
Number of ECS-related issues post-energization
Accuracy and completeness of documentation and as-built drawings
Integration success with SCADA and protection systems
Work Conditions
Full-time, site-based role across EACOP substations and facilities in Uganda
Requires PPE compliance and work near energized equipment
Involves close coordination with multidisciplinary teams and subcontractors
May require extended working hours during commissioning, testing, and energization phases
