Job Description
The Tyre Assistant will be responsible for inspecting tire-related vehicle components such as rims, hubs, studs, and nuts to detect excessive wear, cracks, or other damage. The position involves tire repairs, replacement of inner tubes and rims, inflation, balancing, and pressure testing. The role also includes performing periodic tire inspections, conducting road repairs, servicing trucks on-site, and assisting with vehicle diagnostics. Proper handling, storage, and ecological disposal of tires and scrap are integral to the role. The Tyre Assistant will work closely with mechanics and provide emergency support services when required.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Inspect vehicle tires and components (rims, hubs, studs, nuts) for defects
Ensure proper inflation of tires and perform weekly tire stock maintenance
Repair and replace tires, rims, wheels, and inner tubes
Conduct tire rotation, balancing, and pressure testing
Perform road repairs and emergency call-out services
Assist mechanics with additional workshop tasks
Patch and seal punctures in tubeless and tube tires
Use hand tools and mechanical changers to separate and remount tires
Apply rubber cement and vulcanize patched areas
Diagnose vehicle tire-related issues and test repairs
Maintain cleanliness and organization of tire storage areas
Ecologically dispose of damaged tires and scrap components
Raise vehicles using hydraulic jacks for tire servicing
Order replacements and manage tire inventory
Respond to health and safety standards and ensure compliance
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Minimum Qualifications:
Grade 12 / National Certificate
Technical training in transport maintenance or mechanical field
Experience:
At least 3 years in a similar role
Key Competencies:
Knowledge of workplace health and safety standards
Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
Proactive, confident, and assertive
Willingness to work irregular hours and respond to emergencies
