East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP)

Job Description

The Tax Specialist will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of tax compliance and reporting in Uganda, including VAT, customs, WHT, PAYE, and local government taxes. The role includes preparing returns, maintaining documentation, supporting audits, and advising internal teams on tax matters. The Specialist will also contribute to tax planning, internal reviews, litigation support, and ensuring the company optimizes its tax position while remaining compliant.

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

Tax Compliance and Reporting:

  • Ensure compliance with Ugandan tax laws and agreed fiscal regimes.

  • Assist in managing VAT, Customs, and WHT procedures, including applications and documentation.

  • File monthly VAT and WHT returns and ensure timely tax payments.

  • Prepare annual income tax returns and support local government tax compliance.

  • Guide HR on PAYE, LST, and NSSF obligations.

  • Provide support on customs-related compliance.

  • Advise C&P teams on tax implications in procurement contracts.

  • Create and share internal tax guides and informational materials.

Tax Planning and Advisory:

  • Analyze tax implications of company transactions.

  • Support the Tax Manager in developing tax optimization strategies.

Tax Audit and Litigation:

  • Conduct internal tax reviews.

  • Maintain audit-ready documentation.

  • Respond to URA audits and queries with appropriate strategies and solutions.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Law, Economics, or related field.

  • CPA, ACCA, or equivalent qualification with a tax specialization is preferred.

  • At least 5 years’ experience in tax consulting, administration, or compliance in a multinational or fast-paced environment.

  • In-depth knowledge of Ugandan tax law and international tax standards.

  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.

  • High ethical standards, analytical thinking, and attention to detail.

  • Proficiency with ERP systems and digital tools.

  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a demanding setting.
